Fifty-eight years ago, a group of young black men sat at a segregated lunch counter in North Carolina to demand freedom in the face of white supremacy and violence. Their action helped usher in a powerful new front in the Freedom Movement and led to the birth of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a group of young American revolutionaries who would face down violent opposition in the Deep South to change the course of American culture, politics and history.
