Gather around the narrative pie as Arizona School for the Arts high school seniors share their personal slices of life.
Based on Barflies, Amy Silverman and Arizona School for the Arts (ASA) faculty Julie Hampton have teamed up to create a public reading to showcase the personal narratives of high school seniors.
The last year of high school marks a pivotal transition from dependent child to independent adult and is ripe for reflection on the moments of childhood that made an impact on one's life as one looks ahead to what's next. Hampton's English 12 curriculum encourages students to write personal narratives that demonstrate narrative evidence (setting, dialogue, detailed inventory, gesture, sensory impressions) of a specific moment and narrative distance to suggest what's been discovered about oneself or the world through a writer's lens. The narratives, 500 words or less, demonstrate the courage, humor, and humanity in storytelling.
