Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba

Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba is composed of Senegalese griot musician Diali Keba Cissokho, with North Carolinians John Westmoreland, Jonathan Henderson, Austin McCall and Will Ridenour. The band formed after Diali moved to North Carolina and began to look for musicians who shared his love and passion for creating music based on Manding tradition, flavored with local and personal styles. The outcome of this collaboration is an infectious sound reminiscent of West African dance bands full of unison melody, adventurous improvisation, fiery solos and polyrhythmic frameworks. With lyrics in Manding, Wolof, and English, Kairaba! illuminates its listeners with stories of ancient and modern West Africa and how they relate to today’s universal experiences and emotions felt by everyone, regardless of origin. Kairaba! invokes the participation of the audience in the creation of captivating musical moments that often incite spontaneous dancing by the performers and audiences alike, helping to create a peaceful and loving community.

The music of Zansa (a Nouchi slang word from the Ivory Coast meaning combination, or blend) is an amalgamation of African folk songs and traditional rhythms with modern afropop and zouglou styles. (Zouglou music first developed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in the 1990s as a dance-oriented street music.) Rooted in the West African drumming tradition Dembele was born into, Zansa's sound utilizes drumset, percussion, guitars, and violin. The product presents a modern approach that lends familiarity to foreign sounds. The result is an original take on the authentic sounds of West Africa.
Zansa is led by 33rd generation djembe player Adama Dembele, whose musical career began in the late '90s when he started drum and dance group Djembeso in his homeland of the Ivory Coast. He adapted traditional songs and rhythms, eventually melding them into his own style. After moving to Asheville, NC, in 2005, Dembele has continued to develop and expand his sound, singing in multiple languages- French, Baoule, Bamara, and English.
