The Carnival Project: A Celebration with Batala NYC

Batala NYC is celebrating its 2nd year of bringing the beat to NYC with special guests!

Lucky Chops Brass Band

New and improved, the Lucky Chops are making a big stink in New York City. The six piece brass band combines unhealthy amounts of jazz, rock n roll and southern gospel to get a funky groove that will make you dance like you mean it.

The Lucky Chops will play for any occasion you can or cannot think of. We frequently play weddings and corporate events. Our services have been used for Bollywood Indian weddings, traditional German Oktoberfests, Hip Hop music videos and quite possibly everything in between.

King's County Pipes and Drums

Formed in 2012, King's County is a pipe and drum corps comprised of local pipers and drummers from different pipe bands around the region. Some of us come from competition bands, some from street bands, some from performance bands.

What we have in common is our diversity and friendship. We refuse a common uniform and so we tend to be the most colorful band on the street, wearing mixed kilts and polyforms. We are individuals coming together for a common theme - music, community and good times...

We shun the typical conservative pipe band mentality, generally being intolerant of intolerance. But don't let our happy demeanor fool you, we work hard and we blow hard!

Batala NYC

BatalaNYC is NYC's homegrown band, and the ONLY all-female Afro-Brazilian style samba reggae drum orchestra in the Northeast U.S.A. A "...samba-lanche of music, dance, and color," the group is part of a bigger, global arts project, the Paris and Salvador-based Batala, which has bands in over 25 cities around the world. Batala NYC plays the rhythms of the northeast Brazilian state of Bahia, with roots in West African rhythms. The ensemble takes all women regardless of musical ability and teaches them to drum and dance. BatalaNYC has performed in over 100 festivals, parades, events, shows, and parties, including being the opening drummers for the Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary tour in 2012. The NYC Chapter was started in 2012 by artistic director Stacy Kovacs, and has grown to 85 women strong.
