The Pizza Underground
Macaulay Culkin, child star of "Home Alone" fame, has a Velvet Underground cover band. Not content to merely play the classics, Culkin's anti-folk group has called themselves the Pizza Underground. As the name suggests, they re-imagine the VU catalogue and other Lou Reed songs... but all of the songs are about pizza.
This means we have not "I'm Waiting for the Man", but rather "I'm Waiting for Delivery Man". Not "Femme Fatale" but "Pizza Gal". The Pizza Underground dwells on sartorial choices not simply for "All Tomorrow's Parties" but "All the Pizza Parties". Culkin even offers a kazoo solo on "Take a Bite of the Wild Slice".
The demo was recorded "live at Macaulay Culkin's house on November 11, 2013", according to the Pizza Underground's Bandcamp, and the actor is credited with "percussion/kazoo/vocals". According to The Guardian, the band formed in early 2012 and recently played a Lou Reed tribute at New York's Sidewalk Cafe. Other members include Matt Colbourn, Phoebe Kreutz, Deenah Vollmer, and Austin Kilham.
Since their move to San Francisco three years ago Windham Flat have established themselves as a dance party favorite with their popped out brand of freakbeat garage rock. A favorite amongst rock critics, the groups received numerous accolades from the music media for their 2011 EP “Keep Comin’ Back Around” was well as their 2012 “Basement Sessions” video series. Having already performed extensively on the west coast the band currently sets their sights on more ambitious touring as well as their next release.
The soft-spoken, enigmatic Goodshank made his high-profile debut playing acoustic guitar in The Moldy Peaches (Rough Trade). Once that band began its indefinite hiatus, Goodshank kicked his solo career into overdrive, pumping out albums the way some men pump out semen, touring Europe twice with the likes of Jeffrey Lewis (Rough Trade) and fellow Moldy Peach Kimya Dawson (K Records). In a relatively short amount of time, Toby Goodshank has become a crucial voice in the underground NYC music scene, with unconventional song-structures and surreal lyrics supported by an uncommonly professional approach to his performative craft.
