The PORCH CHOPS formed in May of 1988 at a gig on musician Steve Gregg's porch in West Chester, PA. The name was chosen spontaneously that day and Brad Riesau (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Butch Zito (mandolin/guitar/vocals), and Tom Melvin (banjo/guitar/vocals) played their first public set of acoustic, bluegrass and roots rock influenced music. Within days they began playing weekly gigs at the Red Snapper Restaurant in North Wilmington and area venues with bassist Craig Noland and percussionist Steve Gregg. In short order, they began gigging 2-3 nights a month at the East End Cafe on Main Street becoming something of a fixture there for the next 18 years with drummer "El Tempo" (aka D. Batteria) on board. Over the years, members of the band have included guitarist/singers Keith Moss (This Year's Girl), Mr. Stevie Hobson (Sin City Band) and the late, versatile multi-instrumentalist and former owner of Wilmington's Crossroads Cafe, Kurt Chiappardi. The Porch Chops dedicate this special evening to Kurt's memory.

Featuring many of the alumni members mentioned above this year’s event also features our good friend and honorary CHOP, renowned saxophonist GREG OSBY whose has released 15+ critically acclaimed albums under his own name and performed live and/or recorded not only with us but with Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, Gov’t Mule, Joan Osborne and many others.

Also among those joining the CHOPS this year will be our old friends and musical compadres Jordan Leitner (Mad-Sweet Pangs), Matt Urban (In The Light), Jack Taylor (The Snap), Laura Moss (This Year’s Girl) and Rob Grant (Cameltones)…

The PORCH CHOPS sounds mutated over the years from the bluegrass, folk and roots music of their early years through their more edgy and expansive jam and hard rock middle period to their current incarnation where just about any style of music from hard core old school country to expansive lengthy improvisation. Punky simplicity and psychedelic blues can wind through their mix of originals and cover tunes.

With over 600 original compositions between the band members and nearly 5 times that many covers in their vast repertoire, you never know what you'll hear when you catch PORCH CHOPS in concert. Rock, blues, country, folk, random nonsense often all at the same time. Be there or be oblong.
