Returns to Birdland
Columbus Day, Monday, October 10 at 7pm
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce the return of Jenna Esposito to the stage on Monday, October 10 at 7pm. The concert, titled “Italian Undercover,” in honor of Columbus Day, will celebrate the most popular and influential Italian-American pop singers of the 20th century who changed their names and performed “Undercover!”
Does the name Francesco Paulo LoVecchio mean anything to you? How about Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco? Perhaps you would recognize them by their “undercover aliases” – Frankie Laine and Lou Christie. Sure, most people are aware that Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and Connie Francis are Italian - and they might even be aware that their given names have been changed considerably. But, not everyone knows that the same can be said for countless others, including the likes of Frankie Avalon, Bobby Darin, and Bobby Rydell, until now!
This program, inspired by Mark Rotella’s book Amore – The Story of Italian American Song, features a spectacular nine-piece band. The band is comprised of Jenna’s own 5-piece band, which will be joined by four members of Philadelphia’s renowned City Rhythm Orchestra all led by musical director Fortune Esposito. Of course, Jenna will also be backed by her fabulous backup vocalists, making for a total of eleven pieces supporting Jenna on her “Italian Undercover” mission!
Singer Jenna Esposito made her New York nightclub debut in 2004, and has been delighting audiences across the country ever since. She is, perhaps, best known for her tribute to Connie Francis, which has been a smash hit among critics and audiences, alike. Connie herself has praised Jenna’s work, raving, “I’ve known and loved Jenna for years and love the way she sings. I’m ever so grateful for the love and respect she shows to the catalog of songs that has been so good to me through the years." Jenna is also renowned for her tributes to “The Great Italian-American Songbook,” which celebrate songs that had their origins in Italy, as well as songs made famous by fellow Italian-Americans. In New York City, Jenna has headlined at Birdland, Feinstein’s at Loews Regency, The Metropolitan Room, Backstage dope teatro, The Laurie Beechman Theatre, The Duplex, Danny’s Skylight Room, and NYC’s historic Friars Club. Dubbed “the voice of Little Italy,” Jenna has performed many shows in Manhattan’s historic Little Italy, including solo shows at the famed San Gennaro Festival, and she has also made several appearances in Manhattan’s Columbus Day Parade. Her shows Italian Undercover, That’s Amore: Jenna Sings Love, Italian Style, Takin’ A Chance On Love, A Hint of Rosemary: The Songs of Rosemary Clooney, SMOOCH!, and I Hate Men: Songs for the Scorned have all received critical acclaim, and her annual “All-Star Birthday Bash” is a fun-filled evening during which she has shared the stage with a number of New York’s finest performers. Jenna recently released her third CD, That’s Amore: Songs From The Great Italian-American Songbook.
