Batuke is the act of drumming on any surface, or with any object, that makes a sound. Recycled cans, plastic buckets and pieces of scrap metal have all been transformed into percussive instruments that enhance the musical atmosphere of this group established by Diogo Oliveira in 2008.

Batuke Samba Funk is a unique collective of musicians from Brazil and Miami that performs the classic samba-soul sound that emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1960’s and thrived in the 1970’s with artists like Jorge Ben, Tim Maia Jair Oliveira, Cassiano, Trio Mocoto, and many more. The genre combines the percussive grooves of Brazilian samba with the funk rhythms of American legends like James Brown and Earth, Wind & Fire. The Jorge Ben classics “Mas Que Nada” and “Pais Tropical” became worldwide anthems associated with Brazil and are true examples of the samba-soul (also known as samba-rock) style. Batuke Samba Funk was founded in 2008 by bassist extraordinaire Diogo Oliveira and features a revolving cast of the very finest musicians. On stage the groups can vary from the core 4 members all the way to 10 musicians playing guitars, bass, drums, vocals and percussion, yes plenty of Afro-Brazilian percussion. In fact, the band often erupts into a samba jam session during their shows using traditional Brazilian drums as will as recycled objects like cans, buckets and scrap metal to create a joyous carnaval atmosphere. The band, which also features Cezar Santana on guitar, Brian Wolfe on sax, and Mari Macedo on vocals, performs many covers during their concerts, but are now also writing and recording original songs to be released on their debut album later this year.
