For lovers of alt-rock, alt-country and Americana, Richmond VA’s singer/songwriter Rob Williams will make for a favorite discovery. As the former frontman and founding member of popular bands Joe Buck, Jr. and Contoocook Line, which also featured Pavement drummer Steve West, Rob Williams has released four studio albums during his long career. In May 2013, Williams independently released his first solo album, A Place in the Sun, which ranges from simple ballads with pedal steel guitar to rock songs with layers of guitar and horns. One of the distinguishing aspects of Williams as a performer is that his full band and solo acoustic concerts are equally powerful and high-energy. When solo, Williams hits the guitar just as fast and hard, singing loudly into the microphone as if the whole band were behind him. “No matter how old I get,” says Rob Williams, “I just can’t bring myself to be that sitting-on-a-stool singer/songwriter, quietly strumming a guitar.” Perhaps it’s a byproduct of his formative years playing in noisy bars, when he opened for great acts including They Might Be Giants, Alex Chilton, and The Fleshtones among others. Wherever that energy and full sound comes from, it lends itself to a good time.
