One of the brightest stars to light up the pop firmament this millennium is back, with a difference. Thanks to her brilliant self-titled 2008 debut, LADYHAWKE, aka Pip Brown, shot to stardom around the world, particularly in Britain and the Antipodes, where the New Zealand-born singer-songwriter soon gathered up armfuls of awards as THE breakthrough artist of the moment.
Blackbird Blackbird is the moniker of San Francisco-based wünderkind Mikey Maramag. His unique style of dreamy folktronica recalls influences from all ends of the musical spectrum; deeply textured, hypnotic songs pay homage to psychedelic pop the likes of Caribou and Washed Out, while the warmth of analogue instrumentation spliced with digital artifacts hints at contemporaries James Blake, Four Tet and Mount Kimbie.
Anthemic, dream-driven themes inspire Blackbird Blackbird's work, where layers of electronic texture drape over organic sounds and ghostly vocals. Within elongated song structures, Blackbird Blackbird harnesses thematic elements of dynamism and composition to create depth and complexity, while never losing sight of his pop sensibilities.
Blackbird Blackbird's debut album Summer Heart was lauded by modern tastemakers, receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Fader, XLR8R, Rcrdlbl, and more. Recently returning from a whirl-wind European tour, Blackbird Blackbird has been signed to the Lavish Habits imprint out of San Francisco.
American Royalty is a psych-pop three piece that constructs an unlikely yet glowingly functional blend of dark psychedelic rock and poignant electronica. This creative soundscape is topped off by the vocal lead of Marc Gilfry, whose pipes both seem to fall somewhere in the realm of where blues and soul meet back on the other side.
The hard working trio spent most of 2012 on the road, from SXSW to CMJ, resting in LA only for a month to play a residency at The Echo and record their new EP. American Royalty's unique and seasoned approach to the stage is one of the reasons why KCRW highlighted them as one of the "LA bands to watch at CMJ 2012", and earned them support slots for a wide roster of talent including Metronomy, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Digitalism, The Presets, Ladyhawke, Hanni El Khatib and more.
In February 2013, American Royalty moved from Los Angeles to Brooklyn and released their new EP, Prismatic. The new EP showcases the band's distinctive style, characterized by forward-thinking electronic production, timeless blues rock musicianship and electrifying vocals. Prismatic received early support from radio outlets like BBC Radio 1 and KCRW, while Noisey described it as "a very special genre-hopping EP that'll never leave you bored, ...with R&B influenced vocals and tribal drumming".
