Watch & Listen
The UK duo, known for their sensational disco and psychedelic edits, obscenely vast record collections, beautiful production work and transcendent mixtape journeys, are being heralded as a truly unique and positive presence in today's music scene.
“Fucking Brilliant” ¬ DJ Mag
Although Tom and Danny have both been utterly immersed in music since time itself began, Psychemagik's first appearance on wax was an edit of Fleetwood Mac's 'Everywhere', which quickly found its way into the record bags of veterans like Tom Middleton and Greg Wilson, and instantly cemented their place in the disco music world. The duo have since released a string of highly acclaimed edits, original productions and remixes.
They regularly play at major festivals, clubs and special events all over the UK and Europe – with tours in the USA and Australia set for 2013.
"An ear for mind-expanding dance floor mysticism" ¬– FACT Magazine
Their studio output is prolific to say the least; Valley Of Paradise, the first single from their debut album, sold out on pre-orders and was followed by a slew of incredible remixes from the likes of Greg Wilson, Time and Space Machine, Toby Tobias and Rayko and received critical acclaim and airplay worldwide. Recent remix projects include Azari & III, Metronomy, Kraak and Smaak, Crystal Fighters, Yacht, Time and Space Machine, The Egg, Skinny Lister and The Cuban Brothers.
"Remixers du jour" – Mixmag
And then there’s the edits. Their recent version of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’, a follow up to ‘Everywhere’, topped the Hype Machine charts and has been gaining some serious props from around the globe. They have also released a string of edits on their Healin’ Feelin and Discotheque Wreckers imprints, all of which have made it into the Juno top sellers list.
Their mixes paint the story of two extraordinarily talented and passionate guys. Some blatantly show that Psychemagik can absolutely dominate a dancefloor. Others, like their guest mixes for the Test Pressing podcast, are gorgeously composed psychedelic experiences, which give you an idea of just how deep and amazing their record collections really are. Basically, you can bet that they have the perfect record for any time and any place.
"Perfectly deconstructed Hot Chip's sound for their support slot…Fantastic"
They also have a reputation as the go to guys for mega rare records you won't find anywhere else. Their satisfied customers include 2 Many Dj's/Soulwax, Chemical Brothers, Q-Tip, Fake Blood amongst many others.
It is this incredible ear for musical treasures and their dedication to the art of digging that has lead to the success of their recent compilation, Psychemagik Presents: ‘Magik Cyrkles’ on Leng Records, which sold out worldwide on vinyl within 48 hours of its release and went straight to number one in the Juno bestsellers chart on CD. With a wealth of upcoming releases and their debut studio LP just around the corner, they've already set the controls for the heart of the sun and will be heading into a whole new stratosphere of creativity in 2013.
Sleight of Hands
Sleight Of Hands
(Dj M3 and Phil Collis)
a : a cleverly executed trick or deception
b : mysterious alias of 2 electronic producers
The first rule of professional magicians is that they must never reveal their secrets, and ridiculously-talented Producer and DJ-duo, Sleight of Hands, aren’t giving away any of their mystery any time soon. What they have inevitably divulged through their accomplishments is that when a Bay Area rave specialist and a British transplant with a classical music background come together, the resulting dynamism is no illusion. Manny Alferez and Phil Collis have artfully dedicated the focus of their wizardry to a shared passion for electronic music, and Sleight of Hands beams as a beacon of fresh disco-laden house sounds that is here to stay.
Neither Manny nor Phil was a stranger to the electronic music game. Manny staked his everlasting claim in the Bay Area community in 1990 as a key promoter and DJ, roles for which he took on the abbreviated appellation of M3, short for “Makes Me Move”. The M3 sound began as a fluid, down-tempo approach and eventually evolved to become a funk-charged expression of house and tech-bangers for which he is so well-known today. Manny quickly developed his own legendary party brand known as Green Gorilla and progressed to sharing the decks with industry icons such as Marshall Jefferson, Derrick Carter, Cajmere, Mark Farina, and Rick James. A well-deserved social buzz led M3 to notoriety which would land him bookings across the globe; this further developed Manny’s acumen for rhythm and cultural finesse, which set the stage for his bond with multifaceted performing arts crackerjack, Phil Collis.
Growing up with the sounds of Beethoven, Abba and Queen meant Phil’s musical destiny would be one with diverse chapters. By the early age of seven, he was already heralded a child prodigy and performing classical piano music to audiences across the UK. By the age of nine Phil was inducted into the esteemed Royal Academy of Music and by the age of twelve he had already been tapped for his acting abilities starring in roles alongside Sir Nigel Hawthorne and Liam Neeson. But it was electronic music that would truly capture his heart and he strove to achieve transition. Finally, it was at one of Collis’ appearances that a deranged and confused fan unleashed a physical attack after failure to perform “Sussudio”; this would serve as the tipping point to inspire an artistic identity change, and Phil promptly funneled his efforts into founding his first band, Bachelors of Science. Like M3, Phil’s earlier approach to electronic music was a silky one, and Bachelor’s of Science quickly became one of the pioneers of the “liquid funk” genre while experimenting with a soulful approach to drum n’ bass.
Upon moving to San Francisco, Phil quickly became engrossed in the captivating house beats oozing from the subwoofer that was the Bay Area, instantly pointing him to Green Gorilla and M3. When each of them realized that the other was stupidly awesome, shared visions prevailed and a collaborative enterprise was born. With best-selling remixes completed for international superstars Groove Armada and Dirty Vegas, the duo has made quite an industrious mark in a very short period of time. The impact of holding multiple #1 spots on Beatport proved prosperous, landing Sleight of Hands 2013 performance slots at world-renowned festivals such as Outside Lands and Coachella.
Their magical musical approach to stylistic fusion makes listeners realize that the synergetic skills of Manny and Phil are anything but bluff. Today, relentless dedication in the studio along with a solid DJ residency at world-renowned SF nightlife staple, Monarch, continues to launch Sleight of Hands toward intergalactic success. For their next trick, they will feature a series of releases on illustrious underground record label, Smoke n’ Mirrors. First in line is their premier twelve-inch EP, a trippy deep house number called “All Night”, followed by “Sometimes’ and “Seal the Deal”, two garage-infused chuggers with just enough grime to set off a dance floor. It can only be projected that there is plenty more mystifying amazingness to come from this enchanting doublet in the near future, so keep your ears open and your eyes sharp. Cards are officially out on the table and the stakes are high, so you’d better be watching.
Deep, fat basslines with splashes of techy disco.
Anthony Mansfield has been on a 20-year journey through the world of
psychedelic dance music ever since attending the now-legendary full moon massives of
San Francisco’ s Wicked Crew in the early 90’ s. Anthony spent the rest of the decade
in New York, spreading the gospel of deep house across the Empire State with a late-
night radio show, his 8-year-running weekly, and the countless underground parties
that gave birth to his own crew, HectorWorks Soundsystem. After an exhausting and
debaucherous 2-year run as GM, talent booker, and resident DJ at upstate’ s largest live
music venue, The Odyssey, Anthony was ready to return to San Francisco.
Anthony hit the West Coast running in 2002, joining his old friend DJ M3 as
resident DJ and co-promoter of the infamous Green Gorilla Lounge in a string of
successful weekly club nights, true seat-of-your-pants underground parties, and blown-
out monthly events across the Bay Area, with some of the city’ s and world’ s best names
in dance music. Anthony has left his mark on Burning Man for the last decade as well,
at the Space Lounge, Green Gorilla, and Disco Knights sound camps, with a trail of
exhausted dancers and party people in the wake of his many epic sets on the playa.
Anthony has been producing his own particular brand of dance music since his
first release on Rong Records in ’ 04 with Ben Cook as “ Barfly” . Quickly moving to
found his own label, Hector Works, in 2005 with NYC deep-house production wizard
Nick Chacona, Anthony has worked with Garth, Tal M. Klein, Sneak-E Pete, M3, and
others in the last five years, releasing tracks on Gomma, Moodmusic, Aniligital , and
Om Records. His tunes have received nods (and plays) from some of the world’ s top
DJs, including Dimitri from Paris, Harvey, Greg Wilson, Doc Martin, Idjut Boys, Ivan
Smaggle, and Playgroup. Camped out in his room at Moulton Studios, Anthony is
currently hard at work on the 16th release for Hector Works, and looking forward to
taking a break for the Treasure Island Music Festival!
Tyrel has been a mainstay of Chicago’s underground House scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records where he spent the last decade building a mighty collection of 12” dance records. He spent 2009-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which is an ongoing all vinyl House / Techno weekly dedicated to the true art form of DJing. Guests have included Miles Maeda, Derrick Carter, Tevo Howard, Traxx, and Justin Long. Tyrel has recently moved to San Francisco where he is a resident DJ for Housepitality and has also started his Acid Test party with Bryan Bai-ee, Miguel Solari and Luke David Nasaw.
Jimmy B has been a strong supporter of the SF Bay Underground scene for years. His events and dj sets have been catching ears since his humble beginnings in Santa Cruz, California. Later he moved to SF where he became apart of the widely known underground dj crew "Green Gorilla Lounge", and also co-founded System, and his own VOX party, it's no secret that Jimmy has his finger on the pulse of SF underground dance music.
Originally from Lima Peru but grew up in the North Side of Chicago. Has been playing vinyl and throwing parties since his days at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in the mid 90's. He was heavily influenced by Derrick Carter's mixed tapes, Derrick May's showmanship, Richie Hawtin's plus 8 parties and his classmate, Matt Chicoine aka Recloose who went on to become a renown producer on Planet E.
Miguel became known for his quick mixing and cutting vinyl skills using 'booty' house, Detroit techno, Chicago House and hip hop records back then. This got him attention and bookings at Detroit undergrounds, Chicago, NYC, Seattle, London and Ibiza before moving to San Francisco to try and get into internet radio and the fluffy local underground music scene back then. After a couple years of local gigs he took a long break from underground dance music and became a resident at the Beauty Bar where he used his vinyl blending skills to rock eclectic sets that got the early hipster mash up parties started right. Eventually he took a break to produce music at Moulton Studios and put djing aside. After years of not playing records, life transitions and worldly travels his friend Greg Bird invited him over to play records at his house for Thanksgiving one year. He blew the minds of a few good friends who encouraged him to start playing out. Miguel dusted off the underground music crates decided to start getting back to playing under ground dance music for his friends. While everyone became a digital dj he decided to keep it original and stick to playing mostly vinyl. He met Michael Tello while djing at a house party and then playing tracks together at 222 and they decided to join forces on Housepitality, the Wednesday night party which became the mid week business in SF booking talent from around the world. After Michael Tello moved away to work on Pillowtalk Miguel took Housepitality to new heights and built a serious resident crew with Tyrel Williams, Sean Murray, Victor Vega, Fil Latorre, Bryan Bai-ee, Sharon Buck, Mike Bee and Joel Conway. Shit is serious now.
Miguel's dj sets are unpredictable because he doesn't pre-meditate anything. The idea is to keep it fresh and interesting by taking chances and blending various underground music styles to create entirely new sounds and feelings. His sound could be described as darker house with some deep, tech and soulful funky disco and acid elements sprinkled throughout for signature. He can't stay away from doing this, meow!
He's a monster.
