Anthony Collins

Underground DJ and producer Anthony Collins has proven to be one of the most promising rising stars to emerge from the French house and techno scene.

Born to an American father and French mother, he grew up in both New York and southern France. Getting his first taste of music as a child in his father's jazz recording studio in Los Angeles, it wasn't until later in France that he discovered electronic music as a teenager and fell in love. Acquiring his first pair of decks at the age of 17 and playing his first gig the following year, it was soon time to push his budding career forward by moving to Paris. Quickly establishing himself on the scene, he was booked regularly to play at the city's most prestigious nights, and was soon taking his talents abroad to benchmark parties in Berlin, Ibiza, New York, Los Angeles, and beyond.

Anthony describes his style as a mix of deep house, minimal and deep tech, and his ability to master this range is demonstrated in the breadth of high quality labels he has released on. His EP's span from iconic French imprint Freak N' Chic, to the hailed deep tech sounds of Curle, Steve Bug's Poker Flat, Vakant, Mule Electronic, Ibadan, Liebe*Detail, Horizontal, and Supplement Facts. On the remix front Collins' unique style has allowed him to rework such luminaries as Ricardo Villalobos, and other famed talents such as Lee Foss, Cesare Vs Disorder, Alejandro Vicanco, Boris Werner, and Public Lover (the latest project from Bruno Pronsato). In 2009 he released his first full length album, 'Doubts & Shouts', on Freak N' Chic, to the acclaim of many in the underground scene, receiving full support from Loco Dice, LoSoul, Raresh, Ellen Alien and Shaun Reeves among others. A highlight of 2011, and Anthony's career to date, was his collaboration with Ricardo Villalobos and Los Updates, titled 'I Throw Water Into The Lake', a sultry, at times eerie deep tech number on Nice Cat! Records.

As of late, Anthony has been focusing most of his time on a new venture with New York's Francis Harris. Scissor & Thread, which launched at the end of 2011, is by no means your average dance imprint. The label is a platform for ambitious sounds, mixing up slow and sultry house with the song writing ethos of the indie world. With a steady stream of releases from newly discovered composers, producers, vocalists and instrumentalists, 2012 was an exciting year for the label. On top of managing this new outlet, Anthony has still found time for his own musical endeavors, with upcoming EPs in collaboration with Francis Harris under their 'Frank & Tony' project, and solo work on his own more house centric sub-label of Scissor & Thread, dubbed 'Natural History'.

Granted, a somewhat intense punk rock kid from Vegas into philosophy and Pynchon isn't the most likely candidate to become a club DJ, no less one of the leading American talents in the global electronic music underground, but that is the story of Francis Harris. Over 10 years ago, Francis quite accidentally "discovered" dance music and has approached the craft of DJing, composing and producing it with uncommon focus and dedication ever since. In the studio or the booth, Francis is known to be steadfast, thoughtful and purposeful; an uncompromising artist who takes his art seriously, even is it is "just" dance music. Over his career, that attitude and a fair bit of talent has earned Francis sustained critical notice and a loyal worldwide following. The scene's aficionados have long favored the dark yet moving, introspective excursions Francis delivers as "Adultnapper" for respected dance music labels like Poker Flat, Mule Electronic, Simple and his own boutique imprint, Ransom Note. When teamed with Mr. C of The Shamen as Sycophant Slags, a mischievous streak behind the foreboding Adultnapper persona emerges, evidenced in a string of punchy dance anthems the duo have recorded for Get Physical and Poker Flat, including the 2009 hit single and video "Keep Off."
Firmly established now with 50+ dancefloor-oriented EPs to his credit, including recent high-profile collaborations with M.A.N.D.Y., Francis is no less inspired to continually challenge convention and expand the boundaries of his creativity. 2010 proved a pivotal year in this regard, as Francis embarked on the recording of his first full length album. Titled "Leland," in tribute to his father, the album is a poi- gnant requiem featuring piano, guitar, cello, trumpet and vocals by Danish singer Gry. Although loosely based on house rhythms, "Leland" reaches beyond the club and in realizing this ambitious project, Francis forged new creative partnerships and rekindled a long dormant interest in songwriting, live instrumentation and performance, leading, in 2011, to the launch of Scissor and Thread.

Conceptually, S&T is an open-ended platform for "indie" artist development and album length releases, electronic or otherwise. A slew of talented and wide-ranging new artists have signed to S&T including black light smoke, Bob Moses, Anthony Collins, Gry, Lisa B. and Corbu. In it’s first year the label has also released remixes from Francis' album by luminaries Matthew Herbert, NSI., Steve Bug and Kate Simko.
With Jordan Lieb aka black light smoke, whom Francis collaborated with on producing both "Leland," a a self-titld debut album by former Beirut memeber Jason Poranski, Francis has produced several EPs under a new alias, lightbluemover, including drops on HFN and My Favorite Robot. The pair also debuted an epic all-hardware live set that went on the road in 2012 to BLKmarket in NYC, DC and Art Basel in Miami. Following those perfomances, Francis debuted his first ever solo live show in 2012.

Still another new project from the label is Frank & Tony presents... the brainchild of Francis and S&T co-owner, Parisian DJ/producer, Anthony Collins. With F&T, the pair explore the sexier side of house music, focusing on deep, slow and melodic tracks that feature various vocalists from the S&T roster.

Beyond his commercial music endeavors, Mr. Harris continues to score soundtracks for noted installa- tion artist Matthew Weinstein. His composition for "Chariots of the Gods," featuring the last recording of the late Natasha Richardson, debuted to great reviews at NYC's Sonnabend Gallery in Sept. '09. His second Weinstein commission, "The Childhood of Berthold Brecht," this time with actress Blair Brown on vocal debuted Sept. 2011, drawing praise from the New York Times.
