Ashley Betton "By the Fireside: Soulful Sounds of the Season"

Ashley Betton "By the Fireside: Soulful Sounds of the Season"

Few singers are gifted with the dynamics, and vocal range of Ashley Betton: even fewer use the range they have to deliver performances as breathtaking as hers.

Stylistically she fits somewhere between the energetic pop divas that populate the current music scene and the extraordinary lyrical balladeers that dominated the R&B and soul era. She tends to like upbeat songs that can be delivered reaching stunning highs, think Aretha Franklin, but her delivery of down tempo pieces are grippingly soulful, provocative and rich; solidly in the tradition of 50’s R&B and jazz singers.

Ashley is native to the wide open spaces of Colorado but has made New York City her home since the early 2000’s. She came to the city like many others to pursue a career performing. She brought with her a kind of raw freshness of performance and entertainment vision that, uniquely, New York City is so good at refining into something special. She loves acting and the opportunities the city offers in that arena, but her real niche is singing. She worked in the original production of “Forever Dusty” the biographical show about singer Dusty Springfield that ran off Broadway last season. She can be seen regularly working with singer William Blake in his stunning tribute show “Echoes of Etta” which features him singing the music of Etta James that has played to audiences at Birdland, Joe’s Pub and the Carlyle Cafe, or you can see her rocking houses and festivals all over the northeast with singer Mary C.

Asked to reflect on her career so far Ashley responded, “Singing is the grounding force that helps me make sense of my life, the city, and the world in general. Happy, sad, mad, funny, simple, complicated, it doesn’t matter, singing is the way I touch the ground and affirm that I’m real and connected. In a very real way I want and need my performances to connect to audiences to be the measure of my honesty and integrity. When I open my mouth to sing I want nothing but the truth to come out and for my audiences to be wrapped in the moment of every song whatever the mood and spirit. I’ve enjoyed a lot of success and good fortune since coming to New York. This is my way of giving back.”
