The New Birth Brass Band
The New Birth Brass Band featuring Tanio Hingle
The New Birth Brass Band is at the forefront of the current New Orleans brass band renaissance. The band fuses hip-hop, Mardi Gras Indian chants, funk, and modern jazz with age old traditional sounds...... Winners of a Big Easy Award for Best Brass Band.
Bass drummer Cayetano Hingle grew up in New Orleans’ Seventh Ward, and started playing the snare and bass drums when he was nine years old at Covert Elementary School. Tanio played in Harold DeJan and Milton Batiste’s Junior Olympia Brass Band in the early 1990s, and went on to play in the Olympia Brass Band. These experiences, along with the styles of other traditional players such as Lionel Batiste and Benny Jones, strongly influenced Tanio’s playing, which is a rich mixture of history with a funky up-tempo style. Among the many bands Tanio has played with are the Bucketman, New Birth, and Magnificent Seventh brass bands. He recetly recorded with Eric Clapton.
Tanio had the great fortune of knowing and learning from Noel “Papa” Glass, the bass drummer with the Olympia Brass Band. When Tanio plays, it sounds old and new at the same time. There’s never a question where the beat is when Tanio’s playing.
Leader bios were pulled from interviews conducted and published by Eve Abrams in the book 'Preservation Hall.'
