Samantha Wells Classical Guitar

Samantha Wells Classical Guitar

Born and raised in Italy, Samantha’s exposure to music began early in life. As a young child, listening to her father playing the”Spanish Romance” on the guitar always put a big smile on her face and, according to her mother, made it easier to spoon feed her… In addition, a household library including classical music, Broadway tunes, Italian Opera and Operetta, North-American and Italian songwriters etc., exposed her to a wide variety of musical genres.

While attending school, Samantha studied classical guitar with Sergio Notaro at the Centro Romano della Chitarra in Rome. Attracted by rock as a teenager, she taught herself to play electric guitar, initially generating conflicts with her quiet-loving neighbors, and eventually becoming the lead guitarist of Rouge Dada, an Italian underground band, with whom she recorded under BMG Ariola and toured extensively around the country. Samantha later studied jazz, blues and fusion with Rodolfo Maltese and Gabriele Spano, two widely renowned Italian guitarists, while at the same time re-exploring the classical guitar.

After graduating in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Rome, Italy, Samantha moved to the United States, where she’s lived ever since and where she worked in marketing and public relations for several years before becoming a full time guitarist. Samantha is also an Italian voice-over talent for the corporate, technological and medical field.

Samantha Wells’ guitar playing combines unique musical sense and excellent technique. A believer of music as a profound, sacred and often intimate experience, she strives to convey the essence of a piece while at the same time focusing on clarity and beauty of sound. With a repertoire ranging from the Renaissance and Baroque to Romanticism and contemporary music, at times branching out into the extra-classical, such as Brazilian and Jazz, Samantha is one of the most versatile figures in today’s classical guitar environment.

A student of music and classical guitar of E.C.Torrente of Conservatory Cherubini in Florence, Italy, and of Joao Luiz Lopes of Brazil Guitar Duo, Samantha performs at public and private venues throughout the States. Highlights include duos with violinist Tony Finley at the Fourth Annual Spring Concert, Lincoln Center, NYC, and with flutist Sureka Amerasinghe of London Royal College at the Waldorf Astoria, in occasion of the visit of the President of Sri Lanka to New York City.

Samantha has performed in masterclasses for Scott Tennant, Martha Masters, Laura Oltman, Jorge Caballero, Victor Villadangos, and she’s a winner of the Guitar Foundation of America Symposium, Adult Division, November 2012. Representing the South Bay Guitar Society, she has performed at the 9th Annual Art Panorama organized by the Silicon Valley Art Coalition at the historical Petit Trianon Theatre in San Jose, CA. She performs and co-hosts the Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Festival and Competition and, when in NYC, together with guitarist and friend Jon Donnel she hosts “An Evening of Guitar”, an open mic geared to classical and acoustic instrumentalists, at Nirvana Lounge in midtown Manhattan. She’s also one of the hosts of the monthly open mic organized by the South Bay Guitar Society.

When not performing or teaching, Samantha likes to dip into transcribing and arranging for the guitar, focusing on pieces that are meaningful to her as a musician or simply touch her heart. She recently recorded her arrangement of “Eternal Child” by Chick Corea’s Elektric Band. Samantha is an active member of the South Bay and the New York City Classical Guitar Societies.
