Barbara Lynn (backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band)

Dig Deeper is honored to present our friend Barbara Lynn, the Soul Queen of the Gulf Coast, in a rare NYC performance backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band.

Although it was her 1962 #1 hit single "You'll lose a good thing" that brought her to the world's attention, today Barbara Lynn is perhaps better known for "I'm a good woman" which with its powerfully sassy lyrics and driving beat has made it a longtime favorite amongst soul and funk DJs as a surefire dancefloor filler – plus its getting sampled by everyone from Moby to Lil' Wayne hasn't hurt either.

Still a resident of Beaumont, Texas, where she was born, Barbara Lynn is a commanding vocalist who – unusual for the 1960s – wrote many of her own songs, and led her band on guitar – left-handed guitar at that.

Those who were lucky enough to score a ticket to the sold-out 2009 Brooklyn Soul Festival which we put on with our friend Eli "Paperboy" Reed know how devastatingly electric her live shows can be.

Special guest DJ John Manship ( - one of the world's foremost dealers in rare soul records since 1969 is traveling in from the UK to join residents DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson spinning all original soul and funk 45s for the dancefloor. The Brooklyn Rhythm Band will be opening the show with their own set of soul classics!
