"Horse Opera’s country twang is designed to please dancers and pack dance floors." - The Austin Chronicle
Horse Opera, an original roots music band from Austin TX. Drawing on a wide variety of influences, including a strong respect for the country, bluegrass, and hillbilly music of the 40′s, 50′s, 60′s, and 70′s. Horse Opera was founded in 2006 by Jimmy Deveney, who took the name as a tip of the hat to his love of the old weekly serial cowboy western movies of the 30′s and 40′s. Horse Opera released a debut cd in 2010, “Sounds of the Desert”, went on several national tours, and played the ‘Mirande Festival of Country Music’ in Mirande, France in July 2010.
Deveney reformed Horse Opera with an all new line up in 2012, adding Howdy Darrell on acoustic guitar, mandolin,
and lead and back up vocals. This not only added Darrell’s songwriting, playing and singing to the mix, it also added
harmony as a major component of the band’s sound. Deveney and Darrell then enlisted Heather Rae Johnson on the Fiddle and vocals, and former ‘Jesse Dayton’ bassist, Rick Watson, on the upright bass. Horse Opera performs as a 4 piece, sans drums, and a 5 piece when drums are called for. Original Horse Opera drummer, Chris Wallis, assumes
the throne when the need arises. After a successful official showcase at SXSW 2013 in March, and a stellar set at the Viva Big Bend festival in west Texas in July, Horse Opera set out on a 3 week western states tour.
