City Theater Company presents Jesus Christ Superstar in Concert

Local musician Joe Trainor and Wilmington’s City Theater Company rock out with an in-concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar in celebration of CTC’s 20th anniversary season. This one-night only event features a full band and a cast made up of the company’s fan-favorites throughout the years. Superstar is a rock opera considered widely to be the first concept album. Prior to its Broadway runs and film presentation, the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber collaboration was first presented as a live concert in the same fashion.

Trainor has brought several classic albums and song catalogs to life on stage. His collaborations have resulted in shows including Pink Floyd’s The Wall, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, and an evening of Billy Joel’s music. He partnered with tribute band In The Light to perform Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti and Queen at the Queen. He founded the eponymous Joe Trainor Trio and in 2013 was honored with several awards from WSTW’s Hometown Heroes. Trainor has been working with CTC over the past decade, music directing the company’s edgier rock musicals (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Bat Boy, Xanadu, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Rocky Horror Show, Bat Boy) as well as writing music and lyrics for the new musical On The Air, which debuted to critical success last year.

City Theater Company has been Delaware’s Off-Broadway answer since it was founded in 1993. They traditionally perform out of the Black Box space at OperaDelaware Studios. Known for their edgy refashioning of classic pieces (Cabaret, Sweeney Todd) and artist-friendly environment, CTC has enjoyed rave reviews over its 20-year history. Their mission is to create a body of work for the stage that is consistently high-quality, provocative and new; a body of work that takes risks and breaks barriers in order to engage new theater audiences in an exciting exchange of ideas, images and energies.
The multitalented Righteous Jolly, lead singer of the band Syrrah and the title character in CTC’s Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, stars as Jesus. He is joined by Joe Trainor as Judas. Both men are supported by CTC mainstays of the past, present, and future: T.S. Baynes, Petra Deluca, Dylan Geringer, Lew Inellini, Kerry Kristine McElrone, Dana Michael, Emma Orr, Dan Sanchez, Frank Schierloh, Troy Sheaffer, Clayton Stacey, Adam Wahlberg, Steven Weatherman, and Bill Wilmore. The band includes Joshua Dowiak, Jake Hager, Tom Muchetti, and Kanako Omae.
