The Bellfuries, Pete Krebs and his Portland Playboys, Jeremy Wakefield

The Bellfuries

Since 1998 Austin, Texas’ The Bellfuries have been enthralling audiences with a haunting sound that is somehow both nostalgic, and refreshingly innovative. Joey Simeone fronts the band with captivatingly soulful vocal harmonies and clever, sometimes deceptively playful songwriting. The rest of the band comprises of Mike Molnar (formerly with Ronnie Dawson) on lead guitar, Bobby Trimble (formerly with Big Sandy & The Fly-Rite Boys) on drums, and Shecky Seaver on upright bass. Together, this incomparable quartet has earned the adoration of roots music fans worldwide, contemporaries such as Big Sandy, Deke Dickerson, and JD McPherson (who covered a Bellfuries original on Signs & Signifiers) , and anyone else within ear shot of their alluring untainted melodies. Imagine sending Roy Orbison, Lefty Frizzell, The Beatles, and Sam Cooke into the ring and letting 'em scrap it out for a few rounds. Emerging from that carnage is the mesmerizing sounds of the Bellfuries... or pretty dam close anyway. It's been over 10 years since Portland fans have been treated to those sounds, I think we're ready!

Pete Krebs and his Portland Playboys

Rapidly becoming a Portland institution, the Portland Playboys' twice monthly Friday happy hour (2nd and 4th Fridays, 6-8pm, all ages) has been getting rave reviews and putting smiles on the faces of young and old for several years now. A high-octane mixture of classic Western Swing and Honky-tonk, the band's hour and a half long sets are legendary for their top-notch musicianship, acrobatic solos and deep, heartfelt vocals ranging from cry-in-your beer weepers to uptempo rave-ups. Drawing from the classic repertoire of 30's-60's Country Western and Swing, the Portland Playboys feature some of the best instrumentalists 'Our Fair City' has to offer; Ian Miller on lead guitar, Rusty Blake on steel, 'King' Keith Brush on slap bass, James Mason on fiddle, and Portland legend Pete Krebs on vocals and rhythm guitar. If you're craving some old school Western Swing for your drinking, dining and dancing pleasure, you can't go wrong with the Portland Playboys.

Jeremy Wakefield

“ Jeremey Wakefield is more like Speedy West fused with Jerry Byrd. And a little bit of Noel Boggs." Those are the words used by Wayne Hancock to describe Jeremy Wakefield's playing, and he isn't far from the truth. Throw in a big dash of Joaquin Murphey and Jeremy's own unique sensibilities and you've got one of the world's best non-pedal steel guitarists. In the 20 years that Jeremy has been on the scene, he has played with and contributed to some of the finest Western Swing and Rockabilly music made this side of 1960. His credits include Wayne Hancock, Asleep at the Wheel, Deke Dickerson, The Hot Club of Cowtown, The Horton Brothers, Biller and Wakefield, The Lucky Stars, Bonebrake Syncopators, Dave Stuckey and the Rhythm Gang, Smith's Ranch Boys, Richard Cheese, and many others [Including a tour with Asleep at the Wheel & recordings for SpongBob SquarePants]. Listen to any one of those recordings and you'll hear that even at his earliest he had it together with a great touch beyond his years. He's developed his playing today to a frighteningly articulate and fluid level, and he has a musicality that is natural and unpretentious. - Mike Neer Lap Steelin’
