There's something special about this young lady from Birmingham. Laura Mvula's debut single "She," produced by Steve Brown (Rumer) and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Adele), appeared out of nowhere almost overnight to huge praise from the cream of UK music critics - a track so lyrically poetic that it took on a life of its own.
Described as "The Voice of 2013" by The Evening Standard, the classically trained, singer-songwriter's music fuses orchestral soul with velvety harmonies and emotional vocals giving nods to Nina Simone, George Gershwin and Björk amongst others.
A graduate from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition, the 26-year-old is a unique collision of her Caribbean background and formal music training.
Laura started writing songs on her laptop while working as a supply teacher in a Birmingham secondary school. Now, with some incredible live performances and a praised release under her belt, 2013 looks to be an incredible year for her.
Laura Mvula was nominated for the 2013 BRITs Critics' Choice Award and the coveted BBC Sound of 2013 short list, and she released her highly anticipated debut album, Sing To the Moon, in the US on Columbia Records on May 14.
"The songs [on Sing to the Moon] hail from some alternate pop universe: a realm of choirs and orchestras, of dense harmonies and of songs that unfurl their own forms rather than follow verse-chorus-verse formulas… She's a musical architect… Her lush backdrops flaunt instruments and singing, not electronics; they're unhurried and expansive, surrounding her voice with halos of vocal harmony or letting it float on its own." –The New York Times
"Quietly yet forcefully brilliant… Smart, sophisticated contemporary pop infused with a sense of bliss." –The Wall Street Journal
"With her enchanting, lushly arranged potion of neo-soul, orchestral pop and torchy jazz… most likely to keep you spellbound." –People
"There's a string-swept, horn-infused Technicolor brightness to her full-length debut, Sing to the Moon, that evokes visions of 75-year-old movie scores, and yet the album never feels as if it's trying to re-create anything… Mvula radiates the worldly confidence of a singer twice her age." –NPR
"A triumph of arrangement and melody… combine[s] earworm hooks with beautiful, uniquely shaped verses… Mvula's debut is filled with visceral and musical beauty."–Pitchfork
