Eric Van James Quintet

LEADER: I was a pianist for Nordstrom,
San Mateo, for two years. I have performed at the Broadway Grill and Max's Opera Cafe
(peninsula); Wente Family Estates and Concannon Vineyard (Livermore); Falkirk Cultural Center
(San Rafael); Cioccolata Di Vino and Berkeley City Club; PrescottJoseph
Center (Oakland);
and at the Palace of Fine Arts, among other San FranciscoBay
Area venues. Leader of the
Eric Van James Trio. Have worked with notable musicians, including Marcella Hooks (vocalist),
Mark Waterford (guitarist), Howard Cespedes (saxophonist/clarinetist/flutist), Michael Warren,
John Clark and Rod Verette (bassists), Lee Russell (drummer), and renown alto saxophonist
Herbert Mims, Jr.
Began formal music studies at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, earning an Associate in
Arts degree. I then attended Cal State University, Hayward, majoring in composition. I received
my bachelor’s in music and master’s degree in education from San Francisco State University.
For five years, I was a music instructor with Tam District Adult & Community Education in Marin
County (taught and directed Redwood Community Chorus). Served as choral director at Albany
Middle School; former conductor with the Kairos Youth Choir (Berkeley) and Choral Singers of
Marin. Former faculty member of Berkeley's heralded Jazzschool. Worked as a curriculum
consultant, for a multicultural artseducation
agency, and was a music teacher with Toones
Academic Music, San Mateo County.
