The Ring

The Ring

Formed in 1990, the bands influences included Progressive Rock, Fusion, Jazz, Funk, and even Classical, to form a unique and powerful blend of music. The original incarnation of the band included Tim Urfer on Guitar, Chris Spriggle on Keys, Doug Boggs on Vocals, Rob Fordyce on Bass and Devin Russell on Drums. From the first rehearsal, the ideas flowed easily. The synergy of writing music went fast and furious! Never short on ideas, the group was suddenly ready to record their first CD of original music!

The band recorded its first CD in 1991. Self titled ‘The Ring’, it consisted of 6 longform Progressive pieces ending with a piano ballad. Larry Schalit engineered the project at the well known Hyde Street studios in S.F., with featured guests Zulu spear (Courtesy of Liberty Records) and Shiloh on background vocals, the Record still holds up today.

Playing Bay Area clubs, the group sharpened it’s music with a big, complex, yet accessible sound, unique to the band. With a focus on musicianship and showmanship, the band also opened for Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs) at Slims in San Francisco to rave reviews. The Ring then toured the Northwest playing colleges while also featured on local Radio stations during the tour and back at home.

In 1993 the group disbanded to pursue other interests, leaving a lot of material unfinished and unrecorded. Tim and Chris decided to continue to work together on an instrumental Jazz Fusion group. Within a year they had reconnected with vocalist Doug Boggs to write a few more tunes and do some recording.
One of the tunes titled ‘Somebody Told Me’, will be featured on the new CD. After this brief writing stint, Tim and Chris refocused their efforts on their Jazz project once again, this time reconnecting with Rob Fordyce on bass.

With the introduction of new drummer Brad McKeague, the Quartet would gig and record together for the next 15 years!

In 2010, Tim, Rob, and Chris discussed revisiting the original, unfinished Progressive rock material that never made it to the studio. After a few phone calls, Doug and Devin were back on board and the group has now set off to finish what they started in 1990!

Making some great music!!
