The band was founded in 2010 by Justin Ratowsky in Orange County, CA. Ratowsky had been known as a local singer/songwriter while attending college at UCSB, often riding his bike around Isla Vista while singing and playing guitar. After finishing his collegiate studies he returned to his hometown of Huntington Beach where his guitar and singing prowess earned him weekly gigs in popular restaurants. In an effort to build on his work, Ratowsky began to add band members to his ensemble. Bassist Peter Kreta and Liberian-born percussion/vocalist Dig Dyembe were soon added. In 2011 keyboardist David Ryan and drummer Sean Orfila joined with Ratowsky's project, soon named Cali Conscious.
