Minor Empire

Winners of 2012 Canadian Independent Music Awards and 2011 Canadian Folk Music Awards for “World Group of the Year”, Minor Empire is a captivating global music supergroup known for their unique blend of traditional Turkish music with electronica, psychedelia and jazz.

Its sound is defined by the dreamy vocals of Ozgu Ozman, which soar above an ambient bed of organic instrumentation – kanun, saz, oud, and world percussion, clarinet, guitar and bass -- to create the airy, atmospheric vibe. Led by Ozan Boz, the band’s founder, producer and guitarist, Minor Empire features some of Canada’s finest musicians; Michael Occhipinti on guitar, Chris Gartner on bass, Deb Sinha on percussion.

The group’s debut album Second Nature was released to instant acclaim in 2011 and topped the Canadian national world music chart. Exclaim praised Second Nature for its “slinky, dub-y, Turkish soup of knotty rhythms.” Le Devoir called the sound “refined” and said Ozman weaves a most beautiful music from her Turkish roots. Songlines praised Ozman’s “pure and sinuous vocals” and “the percussion that simmers with delicious intensity without ever quite reaching a boil.” CBC Radio said the album marked “an important way forward for Turkish and world music, in general.”

“Flashing a polished, sophisticated sound, this Toronto-based group coaxes both Western and Turkish music into a delicious dance that is both fresh and stylishly hip. Deeply exotic, bold, expertly worked and voluptuous"
World Music Central

“Dreamy and cinematic textures that unfold with a seeming simplicity. Pure and sinuous vocals, percussion that simmers with delicious intensity”

“The album is a perfect symbiosis between the Turkish traditional elements and the contemporary jazz and electronic sounds. It's tradition from a new generation, perfectly arranged, highest quality and an exciting collaboration between professional musicians. A dream debut!"
