Patrice Pike

Austin, Texas is known for its laid back, bohemian yet ultra committed music scene--something Austin native Patrice Pike immediately conveys. She's just so intelligent, confident and effortlessly cool that she commands a special kind of respect that comes not just from her musical capacity but her big, devoted heart as well.

Proving her musical mettle, Patrice has been a professional musician since she was 16 years old, wowing and influencing musicians, critics and audiences alike. So well respected is Pike that Billboard magazine proclaimed her "one of the finest up and coming contemporary rock singers in America." And while this is indeed, high praise, Pike deserves every bit of it. Patrice has maintained such a raw, down-to-earth quality and irrepressible talent that she will surely elicit even more praise as her career progresses.

And it will progress thanks to her inarguable commitment to and passion for music, and her impressive credentials. Here's just a few of those: she's an award winning singer-songwriter-rocker with a personal though, punk edge, she's co-created numerous records and musical groups (including Sister Seven and Patrice Pike and the Blackbox Rebellion), toured all over the United States and Western Europe and just plain knocked the socks off those who've seen, heard and watched the talented woman.

And if deep musical aptitude wasn't enough, Patrice leads an active life in mind, body and spirit. Not only does she snowboard and ride motorcycles but she also practices yoga and martial arts, extensively travels and enjoys collecting movies, records and books. On top of that, the woman is a dedicated humanitarian who, in addition to other progressive endeavors, works with at-risk youth in Austin and abroad.

As she herself said, "One of my favorite things to do in life is take an out-of-the-box challenge. The more unexpected, diverse, and fun, the better it is. This series is just that and I am thrilled." So are we. For in both music and life, Patrice Pike truly is the real deal.

Maria The Mexican

Influenced by traditional Mariachi music, Maria The Mexican is a hybrid of Mexican folklore and Rock. For ten years, Teresa and Maria Elena Cuevas performed with Marachi Estrella founded by their grandmother Teresa Cuevas in 1970. As one of the first all female mariachi bands in the country, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas is a pioneer in the Hispanic musical community. Her band flourished in the 80s but was struck by tragedy when four of the seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in 1981. Once Teresa recovered she began teaching her grandchildren Mariachi music.

In 2000, Teresa and Maria began exploring other genres of music while simultaneously co-directing Mariachi Estrella. Today the fusion of Maria The Mexican is mixed with a touch of blues, soul, funk, and rock n' roll enhanced by the musical knowledge and sounds of Garrett Nordstrom. With a southwestern flare and melancholy motifs, Maria The Mexican rocks it out in Spanish and English with a host of emotion.

Austin Texas' Alt-country Rock Band Driver is the product of a bunch of musicians who just won't let a dream die. These retreads from bands such as the eighties rock band Mainstreet out of northern Virginia, and the ever popular Austin band Javelin Boot which wowed audiences for over eighteen years, just can't get music out of their system. Many years after the success of their original bands Driver has created a buzz as one of Austin's best songwriting groups, and one that is such fun to watch. The reason lies in the music, and their joy in playing it. No one is going to confuse these guys with twenty something rock stars, but you can't listen to the music and ignore the talent either. Whether it is the strong melodies, beautiful three part harmonies, or the cutting guitar work, Driver brings a modern look at classic genres such as Americana, Alt country and straight up Rock and Roll. If you hear influences from Groups such as the Eagles, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, and the Byrds, then you'll know the roots that inspired this great new music.
