Soul Summit Free Dance Party: DJs Sloppy White, Dave Mata, & Duke Grip

Soul Summit DJs Sloppy White, Dave Mata, & Duke Grip

SOUL SUMMIT STARTED AS AN IDEA... late 2009 after walking around the city and seeing numerous flyers for soul nights. An idea formed. Why not have one night with a delegate from each soul group/crew to celebrate the different types of early soul sounds currently being represented in the city? The idea sprang into action and soon we had three 'residents', Dave Mata, Duke Grip, and Sloppy White. With these three DJs at the core, we also included a rotating roster of guests each month. The original purpose was to challenge attendees with different sounds and to not have a solidified format. Most important, the night is not about the guests but above all the music. With no preference to 'rare' records but records aimed for the dance floor regardless of how rare or common. Soul Summit is not about a 'scene' or alienation. We encourage all people from walks of life to come listen and celebrate early soul music.

Danny Holloway (LA, Dublab, Blazing 45's)

Danny Holloway has an incredible resume AND records to boot! As a writer for NME in the early 70s, Danny has Interviewed the likes of Smokey Robinson, Roberta Flack, David Bowie, Captain Beefheart, Dr John, Harry Nilsson, Love, Frank Zappa, T-Rex, Elton John, Van Morrison, BB King, Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones. During that stint for NME he also got to travel to Jamaica to chronicle the Stones during the making of "Goats Head Soup": "They'd wake up around noon, drink all day and head to the studio after dark. Jagger strutted around like a petulant glamour queen, but everyone else was normal. I never saw drugs, but one producer always suspiciously carried a briefcase." WOW.

Having met Chris Blackwell, he joined Island Records in the early 70s and remained there until 1996 as Senior Vice President of publishing at the label. While at Island he produced 2 Live Bob Marley LPs and helped put together the graphics for the "Burnin" and Natty Dread" albums. During the mixing of "Get Up Stand Up," Marley asked Danny if he thought the song would win over his homeland: "I said it was a great anthem recorded too slowly for its message. Americans want something insistent that makes you raise your fists. So I told the engineer to speed it up and Blackwell looked at me and asked, 'Fast enough?' I said no. So he said do it again and asked me, 'Now?' I nodded. And that's the tempo that everybody knows that song." Double WOW.

Currently Danny resides in LA and hosts the Blazing 45s night. He also is part of the collective and contributes to Wax Poetics as well. We're excited to have Danny bring an amazing collection of soul/funk music to our party!
