A Fine Surprise

A Fine Surprise

On stage for the first time at Hollywood’s Hotel Café, something magical happened between solo performers Louise Goffin and Billy Harvey. Trading songs during the show their sounds sparked and fused together. This immediate and unexpected chemistry was palpable to everyone in the room, prompting them to form the duo A Fine Surprise.

Louise Lynn Goffin, producer of Carole King’s Grammy-nominated album A Holiday Carole, is a songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and a recording artist herself. Louise is the first-born daughter of two teenagers, Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Her musical talent provides the right color of instrumentation while her lyrics and top-line vocal phrasing often brings an emotional vibrancy to the music she helps create.

Louise’s debut public live performance was opening for Jackson Browne at the Troubadour at 17 years old. Her debut album Kid Blue was released on Elektra/Asylum. After recording and releasing its follow up self-titled album, Goffin found solace in the UK after meeting with Dave Robinson’s team and potential producers, that she was inclined to relocated there for 10 years. Upon hearing her demo of “Fifth of July,” WEA in the UK signed Louise and released This Is the Place. The album included the VH1 classic video hit “Bridge of Sighs.”

Over the years, Billy Harvey has been playing his own brand of post-modern pop, working not only as a songwriter but also as a producer. Billy has been the recipient of the International Songwriters Award for Best Rock Song, “Frozen Through”, and broke into the Top 100 on the CMJ Charts with his 2007 release, Bearsick.

Billy the caffeine-addled, do-it-yourselfer, has also been quietly directing, animating, and editing the accompanying music videos to his records, culminating in his 2008 documentary film, Everywhere Now. Filmed entirely on his laptop camera, Harvey intimately chronicled a 7000-mile plus tour, in a car powered by waste vegetable oil. To add to his collection of talents, Billy is also pursuing an acting career. Premiering at the SXSW film fest to rave reviews, the Indy film The Taiwan Oyster, follows Billy’s character, Simon on a fantastical journey of self-discovery. Shot on location, The Taiwan Oyster is a beautifully poignant and darkly humorous road story.

Avi Wisnia

Award-winning singer/songwriter Avi Wisnia presents an eclectic mix of refreshingly original songs and inventive covers, finding inspiration in Brazilian bossa nova, acoustic American folk, 1950’s west-coast jazz, and contemporary pop. Avi's clever lyrics give a knowing nod to his contemporaries, while his smooth vocals and deft piano skills assure you that this is truly something new. Avi has toured the country with his dynamic ensemble and his debut full-length album, Something New, performing in prestigious venues across the country – from The Kennedy Center to The Philadelphia Museum of Art, giving a TED talk about “The Nature and Nurture of Bossa Nova” and even spending a month performing in Brazil. Avi has performed alongside artists such as The Roots, Ani DiFranco, and Maroon 5, and his music has been featured on TV and in featured films.

"Philly native Avi Wisnia plays his own compositions reminiscent of a Brazilian Bossa Nova. Add in his soothing vocals and poetic lyrics and you’ve got something you’ve never heard before." - Helen Leicht (88.5 WXPN)

“Completely Refreshing... Lyrically brilliant… If Wisnia’s sampling of lush, complex songs are any indication of what’s to come, listeners will be waiting eagerly for more." - Alyssa Rashbaum (music critic for SPIN, VIBE, and Rebel Spirit Music)

"Think acoustic Americana with Brazilian bossa nova. Drink a caipirinha, and enjoy the sounds that originated in warmer climates." - The L Magazine
