Zion I (pronounced "Zion Eye") are a hip hop duo from Oakland, California. The duo consists of producer and DJ, AmpLive and emcee Zumbi. The two are highly respected and acclaimed underground artists, famous for Amp's futuristic production techniques, using a mix of live instrumentation and samples, and Zumbi's poetic, positive and socially conscious lyrics.
Formerly known as Zion of indie stalwart Zion I, Zumbi is the latest incarnation of an MC that has been thru many stages of the game. Since his early days with the crew Metafour out of Atlanta, and their deal with Tommy Boy, he has always been open to the natural evolution of the artist. "When we started out, we were just young in the head. It was good though. Every struggle is like a scar from battle, and we all know experience is the best teacher", states Zumbi recalling the long road to success. Metufour soon disbanded under label pressures, and the fallout yielded Zion I (Zumbi & Amplive). The duo soon relocated to the creative hotbed of Oakland, CA and set up shop. Zion I soon released a slew of LP's, all to critical acclaim. 2000's Mind Over Matter was nominated for Best Independent Album by the Source, 2003's Deep Water Slang was nominated for Best Independent Album by the Source, and by Vibe Magazine, 2005's True & Livin' was nominated for Best Independent Album by the Source also. In 2006, Zion I teamed with the Grouch (Living Legends) to create another successful album, Heroes in the City of Dope. With all of this experience under his belt, it is now time for Zumbi to get his. Already having released 3 volumes of his Science of Breath Mixtape series, he has yet another project already waiting in the wings. "The Burnerz" is a new supergroup, with Houston's veteran beatmaker, the Are, which is a gritty homage to soulful hip hop. With Zion I's "the Takeover" awaiting release in the fall of '08, it looks like the evolution is only just beginning. All massive..hold tight!
Amplive is the latest up and coming beat maker hailing from California, one of hip hop's most thriving centers. Amp's building a rep as one of cali's most talented and diverse producer/djs. After his dreamy soulful beats for Zion I, he has been able to produce for major and independent artist such as Akon(Warner), Flipsyde(Interscope Records), Nicole Schercenger of the Pussy Cat Dolls(Interscope), the album "Moneys My Motiviation" for bay area hyphy artist Kafani(Koch), the remix for "Place for My Head" by Linkin Park on the platinum selling Reanmation Album, the soul smash single of 2003-2004 titled "Closer" by the r&b artist Goapele(Sony Records), and a gritty, rough track for LA phenomenon Mystic on the debut hit album Cuts for Luck Scars for Freedom (Goodvibe/Interscope) called "Girlfriend Sistagirl". Most importantly Amplive's most recent success has been his critcally acclaimed "Rainydayz Remixes" album for the rock group Radiohead's In Rainbows LP. Always experimenting, Amplive has done breaks, house, 2 step, dance, electro, mashups, and drum 'n bass, including a remix for Philly MC Bahamadia on "Pep Talk", the hip hop group Zion I, a electro music LP Electrowonderland Vol 1(2006), and a new Electrowonderland Vol.2. In the past years, Amplive has been a part of the video game industry, having his production being one of the main features for the Sony Traxxpad and also a basketball player character in the NBA 2K6-2K7 video game. Finally, Amp's beats have been featured on a number of movies and tv shows, which include "So You Think You Can Dance", "Dirt" by Courtney Cox, "Friday Night Lights", "Honey", "Big Fat Liar","Leperchaun 4", "Americas Top Model" by Tyra Banks, ESPN Sports center, and the "Jamie Kennedy Show".
