Robin Flower & Libby McLaren
Robin Flower and Libby McLaren
Robin Flower and Libby McLaren have been exciting Freight audiences since 1987. Playing rock-solid celtic music, they make it sound brand new. Adding dazzlingly original tunes and songs, Robin (fiddle, guitar, mandolin, singing) and Libby (piano, accordion, singing) have a musical intimacy that is extraordinary, moving from the powerful to the sublime. Their recordings include Angel of Change (with Nancy Vogl), 30 Second Kiss, Steelhead in the Riffles, Twenty Years·Twenty Rivers, and One Plus One.
For this special engagement, they will be joined by:
· Julie Nicholas
· Sheilah Glover
Robin has performed at the Freight for 41 years! She first played at the Freight in 1979, with the release of her first album, More Than Friends. She recorded Green Sneakers, 1st Dibs, and Babies with Glasses while touring constantly, performing at major folk and women's music festivals and venues across the US and Canada. During this time she was awarded Best New Talent from Frets Magazine and a California Arts Council Touring Grant. As well as performing with Libby, she has played in the Woody Guthrie All-star Band in the beloved play, Woody Guthrie's American Song by Peter Glaser.
Libby, a Berkeley native, performed with the popular band, Night Flyte, before moving to New York City where she established herself as a sought-after back-up singer. She joined The Roches, the acclaimed sister act, in 1983. Playing keyboard and singing, she toured and recorded with them for 5 years, which included playing on the Dick Cavett Show, the Late Show, and the Tonight Show. Moving back to the Bay Area, as well as playing with Robin, she toured and recorded with the legendary Ronnie Gilbert, singing, playing piano, and co-writing the song "Mother Jones" for Ronnie's play of the same name.
For over 3 decades, Julie Nicholas has been a notable talent as a blues and jazz stylist in The SF Bay Area. Her gutsy and belting style has delivered an element of soulfulness to her ensemble work as well as her solo performances. Her 34 year adventure of singing together with Willow Wray and Sheilah Glover as the award-winning trio, Nicholas, Glover & Wray, perfected a vocal blend and love of harmony that was an immediate conduit for a successful partnership. In addition to the trio's impeccable vocal union, Julie's roll was invaluable as a major contributor to the harmony arrangements for which NGW has gleaned their reputation. Her rich musical history also includes singing with Terry Garthwaite and Joy of Cooking; the band, Small Change, featuring cutting edge musicians led by guitarist/performance artist Paul Dresher; and regular vocalist engagement with Dick Oxtot's Golden Age Jazz Band.
