Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet (USA)

As a child, Nathalie Joachim, best known as the flutist and co-artistic director of eighth blackbird, would spend hours singing with her grandmother, learning the rich polyglot traditions of Haitian folk music. Joachim turned to that pedigree for “Fanm d’Ayiti” (Women of Haiti), a mighty reappraisal of the overlooked women who helped shape the sounds and cultural backbone of Haiti. “Fanm d’Ayiti” fuses Spektral Quartet’s sound with recordings of her grandmother and of Haitian choirs.
