Hieroglyphics, also known as the Hieroglyphics Crew and Hiero, is an American underground hip hop collective based in Oakland, California. The collective was founded in the early-1990s by rapper Del the Funky Homosapien. The collective is currently composed of rappers Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, producerDomino, DJ Toure, and the four individual members of the rap group Souls of Mischief: Phesto, A-Plus, Opio, and Tajai.
A-Plus of Hieroglyphics and Sunspot Jonz of Living Legends are excited to announce the release of STONEY HAWK (part 1), the introductory album of a two part collaboration between these Oakland-grown underground Hip Hop architects. This first ever complete album project between any members of these two legendary bands is a long-anticipated artistic union that is guaranteed to remind you of the golden era of hip hop beats that inspired cypher circles and freestyle rhymes. With these two artists, raw and real is a given, as well as levity and laughs! Do not sleep...download and grab it on ITunes, Amazon, or Spotify. Check out the videos “Just like that” and “Stay Hungry” on YouTube. Follow artists @sunpotjonz & @hieroaplus for updates. “Stoney Hawk” is used by another artist, so be sure to look out for our names and our logo for the correct one.
Tajai on RAP NOIR
In the film noir tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Otto Preminger, TAJAI from Hieroglyphics (and Souls of Mischief) and super producer UNJUST (Ron Jon Bovi, First Light, Chosen Few) have come together to craft RAP NOIR, a collection of stories from the darker side of things. On this album Tajai plays narrator of tales of crime, vice and passion all over cinematic soundscapes provided by Unjust.
"As an Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Bukowski fan, I wanted to delve into speaking on the seedier things I have encountered in my life as an Oakland resident and world traveler. Also, as a fan of greats like Slick Rick, Kool G Rap, Ice Cube, Scarface and Nas, I wanted to use my skill at storytelling to add on to rap's tradition of cinematic wordplay that takes the listener directly into the action, often while including lessons and useful life observations,” states Tajai on the project. “Unjust has the cinematic beats, with the bugged samples. He brought out a lot of these stories on the record. Wit this album I really want to big up storytelling and its importance in hip hop, in literature, and in general. This project is the culmination of that desire.”
The group plans to tour the album later this year and include some gritty visuals created by Unjust to accompany the lyrical images TAJAI's rhymes conjure. True Crime fans will appreciate this first clip from the album, "Let It Rain."
In addition to the original, “classic” version of the record, Rap Noir also is releasing TRAP NOIR– an alternate version of the album to more “contemporary” beats produced by underground fixture HARRIS THE KNOWITALL.
"I'm dropping these two records like an audio experiment in perception, in style. It is a cinematic record. With a couple of subtle tweaks it can be viewed differently so it's cool to look at it from different angles. I've known Harris the Knowitall for several years, he was part of LEAGUE510 - a group I signed to my label Clear Label Records. I always respected his production skills so when it was time to make the TRAP NOIR record I knew he had the ability to make it like no one else could, and make it so that my record wouldn't sound like anyone else's. My point was to not get a generic “trap producer” but a real music dude who would master these tempos, that was important.
The end result is two engaging albums with two entirely different feels. Check them out!
