Kevin Garrett twists up soulful tradition with singer-songwriter spirit, lush instrumentation, and alternative adventurousness. The Pittsburgh-born GRAMMY®Award-nominated artist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer echoes the kind of grit meant to be smoothed out only on vinyl and emanates the ambition of a 21stcentury festival draw on his 2019 full-length debut, HOAX [AWAL]. In 2015, Kevin hit the road with Irish sensation James Vincent McMorrow and unveiled his debut EP, Mellow Drama, which attracted acclaim from The Fader, Complex, Vibe, and Billboard. It also yielded a hit with the singles “Coloring” racking up 30 million-plus streams. Beyond gigs alongside everyone from Alessia Cara to Mumford & Sons and electrifying festival performances at Bonnaroo, Latitude & Longitude, and Sasquatch, he contributed “Pray You Catch Me” to Beyoncé’s blockbuster Lemonade, sharing co-writing and co-production with the superstar and James Blake. 2017 saw him sell out his first headline tour before spending 2018 recording the new album. Now, his brand of bold and blunt soul unfolds on HOAX and singles such as “In Case I Don’t Feel” and “Faith You Might.”

So, what is Minke?
“It could be an eighties glam rock band, a nineties girl group, or a modern DJ duo,” laughs UK-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Leah Mason—who operates under the moniker. “I’m as obsessed with Fleetwood Mac as I am with Spice Girls, so the name sums up my admiration for a whole diverse melting pot. I think it’s interesting to hear different sides of an artist. I want to show as much of myself as I can.”
Every time Leah records a track, she most certainly does. As a result, the songstress architects a signature style that can veer from moments of stark, soulful solitude and cathedral-size jubilation to lovelorn lyrical ponderances and climactic guitar solos. Long before earning the endorsement of Billboard, HARPERS Bazaar, and Zane Lowe as well as tens of millions of streams, she discovered her calling while growing up in the tiny UK countryside hamlet of Westbourne.
Surrounded by nothing more than “a post office, fish and chips shop, church, and a pub,” she gravitated towards music. As a child, she devoted countless hours to watching dad drum along to the likes Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Tom Petty. By the age of ten, she could play both drums and piano. After buying “an old classical guitar for 30 quid” a year later, she spent “about three years” locked in her room perfecting her approach to the instrument. At 18-years-old, she traded the quiet country for London, landed a major label deal, and cut her teeth performing throughout the city.
In between a series of false starts and label changeovers, she lived in Nashville and New York and wrote countless tunes. Teaching herself how to record on Garage Band, Leah transformed from a blues rock siren into the genre-defiant Minke in 2015.
“For so long, everybody was like, ‘You can play guitar well, so play guitar’, and I was scared to try anything else,” she admits. “I had never thought about using a computer. It was only guitar, bass, and drums. Once I downloaded Garage Band, I started screwing around with it and seeing the possibilities. I felt left out after so long. I eventually got the balls to be like, ‘This is what I want to do. That’s what Minke is’.”
Co-written alongside Paul Garred of The Kooks and recorded in a Kent barn, the echo-y alternative soul of “Gold Angel” properly introduced Minke over a skittering beat and guitar cries. Not only did Lowe tout it on Beats 1, but it graced key playlists such as Spotify’s “New Music Friday” and “Pop Rising.” Not to mention, it hit #1 on Hype Machine and garnered acclaim from The Line of Best Fit and many others. Within a year, “Gold Angel” exceeded 15 million cumulative streams and counting.
The breakout anthem also paved the way for her debut EP, The Tearoom [This Fiction]. Its seven cuts chronicle “two years of living in and outside of London, moving to Los Angeles, and going through two breakups.”
“It was a time of upheaval,” she says. “When I listened back to the EP, I didn’t realize how much I was writing about relationships and men—as well as just being heartbroken. To me, the word ‘Tearoom’ looked like ‘Tear Room’. There are many angles to it. It speaks to the sadness. I’m also British, so the name works on that level,” she smiles.
The follow-up single “Something Better” rises from stark piano towards a gospel-inspired chorus with all of the harmonies performed personally by Leah. It culminates on the heavenly refrain, “Show me that there’s something bigger.”
“It comes from the crazy time we’re living in and hoping for better, but the situation is dressed up as a relationship,” she exclaims. “At one point, I was hanging out with a guy who was very religious. I didn’t know if it would get in the way, because I’m very much an atheist. Our thing was the initial thought. It went on to explore bigger themes or longing for something better though.”
Elsewhere, the eighties-inspired “Too Late” highlights her dynamic range over a danceable beat. The tense “Another Me” doubles as what she describes as “a Peter Gabriel moment” and nods to formative progressive influences. Then, there’s the seismic “Frantic Love.” The track’s Pink Floyd-style expanse spotlights impressive fretwork on a hummable solo, reaffirming how “important musicianship is to me,” as she says.
In the end, Minke is Leah’s life and love projected in song.
“Songwriting is my therapy,” she leaves off. “It’s what I’ve done since I first picked up a guitar when I was eleven. It’s the only thing that makes me feel better, so it’s what I do. When people listen to the Tearoom, I hope they get whatever they need from it. It could be reassurance or someone to identify with. That’s what makes me happy. It’s all I can do.”
