You know a band has got something pretty special when they can gain a solid following solely based on a couple of independently released singles. It is even more impressive when they can keep that fan base while completely changing directions on their debut album. Now dubbed “alternative pop”, Belgian based Balthazar stands by their change of course leaving those initial electro leaning singles off the album. Bold. Then again it is also pretty bold to name your debut album Applause.
In a move that guaranteed total control, Balthazar decided to self-produce Applause which took a total of four years to complete. The entire album is heavily reliant on drum and bass with a focus on steady groove. Singles like "The Boatman" and "Hunger at the Door" exemplify the band's passion for addictive beats.
Drawing comparisons to Gorillaz and Cake and having recently toured with the Joy Formidable as well as legendary Belgian rock band dEUS, the future looks bright for Balthazar. Currently working on their second album, it should be interesting to hear what surprises Balthazar has in store next.
