UNDERHER aren’t quite like any other electronic act or band, and they’re happy to keep it that way. Two entirely different musical backgrounds and an international outlook means the duo can’t help but carve their own path.
The duo formed when Jessica Abruzzese (an Italian-Canadian classically trained singer and actress) and Kalden Bess (a Tunisian-Canadian former sound technician with a burgeoning profile as a techno producer) met through a mutual friend in 2015. Kalden was looking for a singer to work with, and Jessica was growing frustrated with the lack of creative control at the pop label she was signed to. Despite their differences, when they got in the studio to experiment together “everything just clicked” - they wrote two original new tracks together the very next day.
Fast forward a year, and UNDERHER was official, with a growing volume of new material. The pair decided to opt for the DIY route, steadily building an online following by giving away their tracks on Soundcloud, picking up gigs around Montreal, and releasing self-directed videos on Youtube. Regardless of the challenges one might expect of the musical pairing, both Jessica and Kalden reflect on this period as an exciting time - more of a creative “relief” than anything else.
The hard work the pair put in paid off. Their “sound” was evolving into something distinctive; sensual, cinematic and evocative, a blend of the sultry tones of the RnB that first inspired Jess with a dark and deep techno mentality. Quality songwriting is also central to the UNDERHER production process; Jessica’s lyrics range from themes of raw confessions and profound desire to international conflict, all through the lense of an imperfect, distinctly human narrator.
They began to play festivals and club shows internationally: Stereo Montreal, Piknic Électronik, Uberhaus Beirut, Blue Marlin Dubai, Sisyphos and Katerblau Berlin being just a few examples. Each gig and trip abroad provided further inspiration; “we try and take a piece of wherever we go with us into our music.” .
Over this period, UNDERHER developed their own uniquely immersive and engaging live sets, with Jessica’s hypnotic vocals and Kalden’s rich synthetic tones, beatwork and sequencing setting them far apart from other acts in similar genres. Soon they found themselves supporting their musical role models HVOB and SOHN, and providing official remixes for Moby and U2 - “a dream come true”. Despite working with these huge names, UNDERHER have resisted the temptation of turning in mainstream friendly or obvious versions; any remix they undertake has to fit into their live set, and so becomes completely their own - original vocals from Jessica included.
With a strong identity having been established, UNDERHER are now focusing on refining and officially releasing their huge volume of material across all DSPs. The first EP, ‘Inside’ - distributed through their own imprint IAMHER - was released in October 2018, and was closely followed by ‘Dark Souls’, and
‘Mercy’. The pair’s unique sound caught the ear of Netflix executives, and now ‘Inside’, ‘Strained Are We’, ‘‘Dark Souls’ and ‘Mercy’ (Harri Agnel Remix) have featured in Danish series The Rain, Spanish series Elite and Italian series Baby respectively, with the sensual music being reflected in their featured scenes’ content. Thanks to their emotive, cinematic sound, it’s clearly just the start of soundtrack recognition for UNDERHER.
Ever keen for development and change, the duo have now moved to Berlin from their native Canada, fully immersing themselves into the European electronic scene. With more solo EPs, collaborations and high profile remixes, plus a brand new album on the way, UNDERHER’s upward trajectory shows no signs of slowing.
