Angela James’ music brings to mind the rich, deep voices of artists like Patsy Cline and Rosanne Cash with the narrative sensibility of more modern female troubadours like Neko Case and Gillian Welch. Her work speaks to new horizons in progressive Americana in a way that feels both indebted and freed from the strictures of time and has been called “smoldering and gorgeous” by the Chicago Reader. She has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, WBEZ, and Tiny Mix Tapes, among many others. Born and raised in TN, with sojourns in Mississippi and Brazil, Angela lives in Chicago with her partner, visual artist, musician and curator Jordan Martins, and daughter Hattie.
With her first full length record, Way Down Deep (2014), James took her nascent career to the next level of craftsmanship by employing some of Chicago’s finest jazz improv players and incorporating them into a bold sonic tapestry. On her second full length, Time Will Tell (2016), she explores similar themes of love and loss but with more darkness, confidence and curiosity. Her third record, Quiet Night: A Collection of Lullabies, out on April 12, 2019, is inspired by many sleepless nights as a new mother and her struggles with postpartum depression. She invited other parents of young children to collaborate on the record resulting a beautifully crafted and conceived collection of songs created by weary people for weary people.
SPECTRALINA is the audio-visual performance project of Dan Bitney and Selina Trepp, collaborators, lovers and magicians.
Working in an improvised format, Spectralina creates an image-sound relationship that treats each medium as equal, resulting in performances in which projection and sounds come together as visual music.
In Spectralina Dan uses a computer, synthesizers, drums, voice and analog processors to improvise with sounds and images. In Spectralina Selina sings, animates and plays the videolah, her instrument that creates animated projections in real-time.
