Sam Amidon is a singer-fiddler-banjoist-guitarist originally hailing from Vermont. His most recent album, "The Following Mountain," which fuses folk-inspired song form with experimental improvisation, was released in May of 2017 by Nonesuch Records and featured appearances from legendary percussionist Milford Graves.
Prior to "The Following Mountain," Amidon released five solo albums on the Bedroom Community and Nonesuch labels. Amidon's material for these albums consists primarily of adventurous reworkings of traditional American ballads, hymns and work songs, with the New York Times writing that Amidon "transforms all of the songs, changing their colors and loading them with trapdoors." The albums have been deeply collaborative in nature, inviting contributions from musicians such as composer Nico Muhly, guitarist Bill Frisell, and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler.
Sam Amidon has also recorded or performed as a guest artists with musicians such as Jason Moran, Bon Iver, Tune-Yards, Pekka Kuusisto, John Prine, and Amidon’s wife, singer-songwriter Beth Orton. He has also appeared as a soloist performing his songs with orchestras such as the SPCO, The Britten Sinfonia, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, among others.
After traversing 5 continents and 20 countries with only a guitar and a backpack, Humbird returns home to sing songs from the edge of the world. Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches traditional genres of folk and Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars.
Creating music out of a mosaic of influences like Joni Mitchell, Bon Iver and Bill Frisell, Humbird weaves it all together with powerful lyrics and a stubborn pursuit of the sound of the North. The release of Humbird’s double EP "Elsewhere and Where Else" in Summer 2017 is just the beginning.
