Seattle Rock Lottery
The Rock Lottery premise is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evening's performance venue. These volunteers are organized into five groups through a lottery-based chance selection. The five separate groups are then released to practice at different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name and three to five songs (with a one cover-song limit). The groups will then perform what they have created at 10:00PM that evening in front of a waiting audience.
The twenty-five musicians included in this experiment are selected in an attempt to represent a wide variety of musical styles. This event intends to bring together many facets of the Seattle music community that may seem incompatible as well as musicians whose interests may conflict. The challenge for these musicians is to try and go beyond their personal and musical differences and work together to create a unified group project that still contains the personal styles of each of the participants.
Instigated in 1997 by Good/Bad Art Collective music coordinator Chris Weber in Denton, TX, the Rock Lottery has become a highly anticipated music event in the North Texas, Seattle and Brooklyn areas. In its eighteen-year history the Rock Lottery has featured over six hundred individual musicians from some of these area's most acclaimed acts (Antibalas, Asleep at the Wheel, Bedhead, The Baptist Generals, Bowling for Soup, Brave Combo, Built to Spill, Centro-matic, The Dap Kings, Deerhoof, The Dismemberment Plan, Father John Misty, fIREHOSE, Fleet Foxes, The FLVR Blue, Fly Moon Royalty, Gorilla Biscuits, Harvey Danger, he Hold Steady, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Damien Jurado, Kinski, Kithkin, KMFDM, Les Savy Fav, Lift to Experience, The Long Winters, Midlake, Minutemen, My Morning Jacket, M83, Maktub, The Marked Men, Mother Love Bone, Murder City Devils, Nada Surf, Nation of Ulysses, Oneida, Parquet Courts, Pedro the Lion, Peelander-z, The Polyphonic Spree, Ra Ra Riot, Reggie Watts, The Riverboat Gamblers, Slobberbone, Swans, Tiny Vipers, The Toadies, and YEAH YEAH YEAHS, among many others).
