The late 80’s and early 90’s were a huge influence for many new artists. But when they cite sounds from great artists like Johnny Marr, Cocteau Twins, The Durutti Column and The Beach Boys, you know they are on the right track to something great.
Combining up-beat drum beats, melodic bass riffs, jingly guitar leads, and fluttery lighter-than-air vocals, the band give out soft, yet bouncy ray of sunshine not unlike The Sundays’ debut album ‘Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic’ captured. Tallies bridge that long lost sound with yet a new and youthful take on something all their own.
Coming out of Toronto, Canada this Indie Pop band just recently formed this year by lead singer and guitarist Sarah Cogan and guitarist Dylan Frankland. With Cian O’Neill on drums and Stephen Pitman on bass they are set to release their debut album in early 2019 via Kanine Records (USA) and Hand Drawn Dracula (ROW).
“Tallies are the personification of basking in the first rays of the year. Tentatively hopeful and finally ready for whatever comes next.” – GOLD FLAKE PAINT
“Crafting the kind of woozy, surf-pop nodding gold that wouldn’t sound out of place blaring out of a busted cadillac cruising past Venice Beach” – DIY
Born out of an understated jazz program and moulded within the depths of a musically renowned steel city, Blue Mantra has become a name of familiarity through their trajectory of infusing soulful melodies, progressive jazz complexion, nostalgic indie sentiments and an underlying rock ‘n roll ethos that needn’t be questioned. The ethereal, emotive movements of Aoife-Louise Doyle’s soaring vocals and Kyle Simons’ grasping guitar repositories are contrasted and complimented by the never-ending soundscapes of bassist Devon Savas and drummer Travis Myers.
In March of 2018, Blue Mantra released their debut single, Since When Is Love. Their sophomore single, Alchemy, followed in June. Currently, they are taking the final steps towards completion of a self-titled debut EP; a release is set for September 7th.
Through rapid hype succession within just over a year and a half of their inception, this four-piece indie outfit is certainly one to keep on your radar in 2018!
