DOJO is Japanese for ‘The Way’. It’s a temple, both martial and mental. And it’s my initials. ish.
A moniker frees space for artists to revolve through a project: Creators of the universal language, influences wide as muddy rivers, and homages not appropriations. Music is the detonator love bomb and the deathpeace of unity in resistance. Follow mine here.
Fun stuff is already loaded, like songs, video, events, other black holes of meta media, and this thing Prince calls life. More devourables will come regular-like. There’s even a weekly column! It’s called ‘Hustle’. It’s about making passion work under capitalism. Emphasis on women and POC. It’s a takeoff on an interview project I uh… lost all my footage of.
So: Come Selebrate the Summer Solstice with a breakout show dedicated to the Sun? Alongside weirdos TBA. You know the date...
And I’ll leave you with the latest:
The inimitable DJ Laura DeFazio, of New Orleans’ 102.3 WHIV FM, had me on-air before leaving to literally dig up ancient Ireland. Laura had this to say of ‘Bound’:
“LIVE. This is just such a great song. Beautiful melody, great lyrics, heartfelt/unique take on a theme that many people completely botch (moving to New Orleans & falling in love with it.) There was a line somewhere in there that I loved but can’t remember verbatim, about getting so tired of words sometimes and just wanting to hold somebody (which very much struck me, because I’d just been packing and rediscovered one of my old poetry books by E.E. Cummings, and one of my favorite poems, ‘since feeling is first’ … Anyhoo, some of the vocals brought to mind Jeff Buckley, so we picked a Jeff tune to follow it.”
--Stream or tune into Laura’s badass program, ‘Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes,’ Thursdays at 8pm.
Breathe big. You’re goddamn beautiful, and so is your mother.
FootsXColes is a versatile production duo hailing from the Washington D.C., metropolitan area. The group is made up of Foots (drummer, songwriter, singer) and Coles (producer, singer, pianist). Their music is a refreshing take on alternative R&B – spacey soul music with futuristic sounds and vivid lyrics. The duo’s latest album, Sitting in Outer Space, was released in early 2018. From start to finish, the album transports the listener to another dimension.
Adam Kahati, a New York DJ/producer and junior at UMD, has had early success through remix opportunities for Lost Kings, Two Friends, and Kap Slap to name a few.
