El Mar is Miami native and singer/songwriter, Joey Primero, alongside a collective of NYC-based musicians (most of which attended Berklee College of Music). Raised by a single mother who moved to the states as a teen from her native Colombia, Joey decided to release music under the moniker "El Mar," which translates to The Sea in Spanish, as a nod to her roots and seaside upbringing. El Mar released her debut EP, The Road, in 2015 and debut album, Try To Forget, in 2017, which received rave reviews from Billboard, Paste Magazine, The New York Observer, and more. Her forthcoming EP, Walking With Dogs, which is out June 15, was written while Primero was, well, walking with dogs, after leaving a career in the music industry, where she had worked as a music publicist for over 5 years. Having worked with countless bands, including many notable ones at that, Primero still struggled to let go of the artist and songwriter in her that was longing to be heard.
"Primero’s voice shines with an impressive control and distinct vibrato, and the lyrics being delivered have a discernible edge that only comes with sharing absolute truths." - Billboard
"El Mar does something impressive with her music by connecting with the listener and saying the things we’re too afraid to say out loud." - Paste Magazine
"...powerhouse vocals and sharp guitar riffs. Her romantic sound is perfect for long summer days." - The Observer
"...thoughtful yet bright output harks back to 90s sounds with a modern edge, reminiscent of Wolf Alice or Black Honey. " - The Line of Best Fit
