Watch & Listen
Lawrence English is a composer, media artist, and curator based in Brisbane, Australia. Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, English's work prompts questions of field, perception, and memory. He investigates the politics of perception, through live performance and installation, to create works that ponder subtle transformations of space and ask audiences to become aware of that which exists at the edge of perception.
Over the past 10 years, Lawrence English has been one of the leading international voices in field recording. Working extensively across the world, from Antarctica to the Outback and the Amazon to Japan, his recordings display an utterly personal approach informed equally by technique, theoretical investigations, and aesthetic interests. In addition to his performance at The Cedar, Lawrence will be hosting his signature Notes From The Field Artist Lecture and The Radical Listener Field Recording & Listening Masterclass at The Resonance Box on the evening of June 1st and the afternoon of June 2nd, respectively. The lecture, which sees Lawrence share his unprecedented research and conceptual approaches to the act of listening and practice of field recording, is strictly limited to 40 individuals. The masterclass, which sees Lawrence take participants on a listening field trip and guide them through the specific techniques of field recording and listening he employs in his work, is strictly limited to 15. The Radical Listener has been presented at numerous festivals and universities including Unsound (Poland), Resonant Forms (Los Angeles), Substrata (Seattle), Brown University (Rhode Island) and as a lecture at the University Of Porto (Portugal), Harvard (Boston) and many other locations.
Modify is the pseudonym of experimental sound artist Dean Berlinerblau. Through a cacophony of texture and meditative severity, Berlinerblau's music harbors a reflection of societal flux and the interplay between chaos and order in the brave new world we now inhabit. Modify emphasizes the imperative spirit of the individual through a boundless exploration of potential existence. His debut album, Transformational Variances, was released on CD (Self-Released) and cassette (Æther Tapes) in fall 2017.
IE (Playing the music of Terry Riley)
IE (pronounced “ee”), from Minneapolis, MN, is a band devoted to experiences of hypnotic minimalism—sonic rituals from the future. They perform in various combinations with sustained tones, electronic whirrs, slow beats, video and film projections, metaphysical recitations, and carefully crafted atmospheres. The current lineup includes keyboardist Michael Gallope (Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, Skeletons, Starring); drummer Meredith Gill; bassist, violist, and vocalist Crystal Myslajek (Brute Heart); multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Mariel Oliveira (XOXO tech, The Controversial New Skinny Pill); and keyboardist Travis Workman. Having released two cassette tapes of minimal drone music in 2016 (MJMJ Records) and 2017 (Shinkoyo Records), IE will be releasing its first full-length album in 2018.
