Johnny Dowd

American alternative psych-country/synth-folk singer-guitarist writer. Born 29 March 1948 in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. Moved to Ithaca.NY a while ago where he ran a moving van by day and maybe still does.
He first played Toronto in '99 @ The El Mocambo and has returned many times since. The Sadies like him.
So does The Independant (UK) > “Imagine if Hank Williams had mutated into Captain Beefheart, acquiring a bunch of primitive electronic equipment along the way, and you’ll get some idea of where Johnny Dowd is at on Execute American Folklore. . . . Gloriously deviant.“
And MOJO > “It’s weird, uncompromising and, compared with anything I’ve heard this millennium, certainly unique...beatnik rock, poetry, prose, jazz rock, rap, screaming metal guitar, retro pop, spoken word and country noir.”
And Uncut > “There’s nobody quite like Johnny Dowd, a dapper Texan Charles Bukowski backed by a jazz-country funk shuffle. It’s really quite brilliant, putting to shame artists half his age.”
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
The legend of Johnny runs pretty fuckin' deep.
