ZERZURA - Philadelphia Premiere
(Dir. Christopher Kirkley, 2017, USA/Niger, 87 min)

From the creator of the “Nigerian Purple Rain” comes the first-ever ethnographic acid Western! Zerzura follows a young man from a small village in Niger who leaves home in search of an enchanted oasis. His journey leads him into a surreal vision of the Sahara, crossing paths with djinn, bandits, gold seekers, and migrants. Equal parts Jodorowsky and Jean Rouch and written and developed with a local Tuareg cast, Zerzura mixes ethnofiction with the genre picture, exploring themes of migration and exoticism through a collaborative approach. Narrated throughout with improvised instrumental guitar from lead actor Ahmoudou Madassane (a member of Mdou Moctar’s band), the score sets the tone for a fever dream of a journey.

"Santa Ana"
(Dir. César Pesquera, 2017, USA/Spain, 8 min)
Part art-film, part documentary, "Santa Ana" aims to elucidate the link between evil and the famed Santa Ana winds, extremely dry down-slope winds in Southern California supposedly responsible for a tense, uneasy, wrathful mood among the people of Los Angeles.
