Donnell Rawlings became a comedian, he served for the Air Force, stationed in Korea. Upon his return to Washington D.C., where he grew up, he decided to check out the comedy scene there, and became known as the “official heckler” for the way he treated the established comedians while watching them. One dared him to bring his act to the stage, and six months later he was performing for HBO’s Def Comedy Jam.
Rawlings, however, is more known for his roles in the acclaimed Comedy Central sketch show Chappelle’s Show. He portrayed many recurring characters, such as Ashy Larry, the black man who only wears his white boxers, amd Beautiful, who always wears a Jheri curl. He is also known for his catchphrase, “I’m rich, biaaaaatch!” He also made use of his knowledge of the Korean language in some of the show’s sketches. When Dave Chappelle abruptly left the country in the middle of production for the third season, he hosted the so-called “lost” episodes with fellow star Charlie Murphy.
Rawlings’ humor has also made its way to radio, first doing weekly appearances on Hot 97 Morning Show in New York City, and later, the morning show Egypt and Ashy in the Morning on rival Power 105.1. He also had a cameo role in the 2004 superhero film Spider-Man 2, as well as guest appearances in shows such as Law & Order, The Corner, Third Watch, and The Wire. He also starred in the Internet video series From Ashy to Classy, which has since been picked up for a second batch of episodes.
His brand of observational humor also led him to shooting some interstitials for MTV. He is currently working on the films Legacy, Something Like a Business and Last Day of Summer, and is set to appear in the reality series Reality Bites Back.
