Kelsey Warren has been around the block, having fronted a long-running and successful rock band based on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. But Blak Emoji, the current face of Kelsey Warren, is something entirely different and new--both for Warren himself and for the listener weary of monotonous music trends.
Warren is capable of plenty: He studied jazz guitar, classical voice and music theory at the University of Miami, and has played and sung in every possible context, as leader, sideman and hired gun around New York City. Blak Emoji is where he puts it all together for himself, mixing his tendencies as a brainy, substantive and complex writer with a fixation on synth sounds.
Quazz The Kid
Nuclear Family Fantasy
Ra means the 'sun god' in ancient Egyptian, 'the brightest star' & 'lion's roar' in ancient Persian astrology. His voice is a gospel soul wail that reminds the listener of Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Whitney Houston & Chaka Khan. His iconoclastic look is in the sartorial rock-dandy tradition of Bowie & Prince. His performance style is fiery & commanding making the smallest of stages feel like massive stadiums.
Ra started recording professionally at age 8, published as a songwriter at 10 & netted a major-label recording contract as a teenager. He recorded an exclusive press-only album which almost instantly became a bootlegged, cult classic & critical success garnering such accolades as 'lyric sheet of the year' from Spin magazine, 'cult classic' from village voice & 'glorious singing' from New York Times.
Ra continues to write, record, release and perform songs. He is currently working on a follow up mixtape & mini album to the German EP entitled 'My name is Rasalus'.
