Ghost Light feat. Tom Hamilton & Holly Bowling
Ghost Light is a true musical collaboration; five personalities, five perspectives, and five unique approaches towards one common sound.
Rather than initially focusing on live shows, the band played together for the first time in a recording studio in Philadelphia. This decision gave the band’s members - Holly Bowling, Tom Hamilton (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, American Babies, Brothers Past), Steve Lyons (Nico’s Gun), Raina Mullen (American Babies) and Scotty Zwang (Dopapod) - the ability to come to the project with fresh ears and no pre-conceived notions. They developed the songs as they developed their musical communication which led to trust, creativity and an adventurous take on the process. Scotty Zwang explained it thusly, “It’s an unique and interesting approach we get to take...” “we are being patient with each other and figuring out what the song needs”
While the recording project has been the beginning point for Ghost Light, the live experience is what will define this band. “In the parts of the sessions where we have had a little more room to just let things go, there have been these little glimmers of what the improvisation will feel like live. That’s a whole other thing and it’s very exciting,” notes Holly Bowling.
The first half of 2018 will see the band playing major venues in major markets coast to coast, followed by heavy rotation on the festival circuit. The debut record will be released in the second half of the year and will be supported by an extensive tour. In 2018 you will get to know Ghost Light, and the future could not be brighter.
Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco-based classically trained pianist Holly Bowling, who infuses jam band music with a technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at SF State University, Bowling has turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013’s Distillation Of A Dream album and the newly released Grateful Dead focused Better Left Unsung (released December 9, 2016 through The Royal Potato Family). Her instantly compelling playing and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Branford Marsalis, and other luminaries who’ve asked Bowling to perform with them, and led to her being featured both as a solo artist and band collaborator as part of this years Christmas Jam hosted by Warren Haynes. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling plans to expand her solo touring in 2017 and beyond.
I have been fortunate to work in the music industry for over 10 years. Some of the bands or musicians I current play with include RAQ, Chris McClenney, Tom Hamilton, and Conspirator. I have also had the pleasure to perform in Dopapod, Greenhouse Lounge, Sonic Spank and many more talented bands. Music has taken me all over the world, and I'm so grateful for my experiences throughout the years. See you down the road 🙂
