Sabores Latinos

BMI, Meridian 23 and Guataca Nights have teamed up for Sabores Latino, a premier presentation of New York based Latin artists spanning origin and musical styles. An inspiring way to end an APAP experience, or for fans, a lineup not to be missed.

Jorge Glem is a Venezuelan songwriter, exceptional cuatro player and mandolinist who has earned various accolades, such as a Latin GRAMMY nomination for his work with C4 Trio, and multiple Latin GRAMMY awards for his work with Ilan Chester, Maria Teresa Chacín and Marc Anthony. Recently, Jorge has been nominated for GRAMMYS as a musical producer of Pafuera, an album by C4 Trio and Desorden Público.

Los Hacheros Though only counting five members, Brooklyn’s Los Hacheros can sound like a conjunto of 12. Eddie Venegas (Marc Anthony, Orchestra Broadway), who plays violin and sings chorus, improvises mambos on the trombone, Itai Kriss (Edmar Castaneda, Grupo Latin Vibe) sings, plays flute, campana, and güiro, while Papote Jimenez in charge of lead vocals, soulful soneos (improvised verses) and congas. William Ash (Alfredo de la Fe, Brenda K Starr) holds down the tumbaos on baby bass, while Jacob Plasse plays the tres, a guitar-like instrument originating from the Oriente Province in Cuba. They have had successful releases with Bambulaye and Pilon, and continue to be the modern-day torchbearers of the Golden Age of Latin music.

Gregorio Uribe is a Colombian-born singer-songwriter and accordionist who graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Uribe has forged a unique place in the music scene in both the United States and Latin America. He’s well known for leading the Gregorio Uribe Big Band, a 16-piece orchestra that blends cumbia and other Colombian rhythms with powerful big band arranging. Uribe’s release of Cumbia Universal, featuring 8-time GRAMMY-winner and Latin music icon Rubén Blades, found success on the Billboard charts and received widespread critical acclaim with sold-out performances in prestigious venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center. Uribe has performed with Latin Icon Carlos Vives on several occasions, including an engagement at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He was also named by the government of Colombia as one of the "100 most successful Colombians abroad." Uribe is currently in the process of recording his next self-composed album, with his most recent smaller formatthat highlights his songwriting and the presence of the accordian.

Flor de Toloache Founded in 2008, Flor de Toloache is led by singers Mireya I. Ramos (founder) and Shae Fiol (founding member). Reminiscent of the early days of mariachi, the group started as a trio (harp, violin and vihuela.) Today, Flor de Toloache performs as a full ensemble. The members all hail from diverse cultural backgrounds, which helps define their unique flavor and sound. Their current album Las Caras Lindas won the coveted Latin GRAMMY for Best Ranchero / Mariachi Album Category, making New York City history as its first and only all-woman Mariachi group. They recently completed tours with Café Tacvba, La Santa Cecilia and Mexrissey, and were featured on Holidays Rule Vol. 2, featuring Paul McCartney. While working to preserve centuries of old traditions of Mariachi, their mélange of the traditional and modern styles pushes the boundaries of the genre and brings Mariachi music to new audiences.

Zeo Muñoz This Dominican native attributes New York for boosting his passion for music. The self-taught guitarist always dreamt of being an artist, and played throughout his hometown before relocating to New York City. While Muñoz has studied piano and harmonica, his favorite musical weapon is his guitar, which accompanies him to all his performances. Muñoz’ passion encouraged the release of his self-produced album entitled No Se Lo Digan A Ella, which explores the various stages of love. The album featured Wason Barzobán, songwriter and singer of Negros group; Tony Almont, singer of rock band Toque Profundo; Pedro Cruzmonty of Mi Amorch Trio and trumpeter Juan Gabriel Jiménez. Munoz continues to tour and is always working on new music.
