The Innocence of Experience: Fanny Seward In Her Own Words

The Innocence of Experience: Fanny Seward In Her Own Words

An original play by Maria Coleman

Step back in time with Fanny Seward, the youngest daughter of Secretary of State William Seward, for a first-hand look at history. Based on the diaries kept by Fanny during the Civil War era, this one-act play reveals an American girl living through an extraordinary time. Her unique perspective brings the audience into the Lincoln White House and the highest reaches of power in the Union government. Yet it also chronicles the familiar everyday experiences of a teenager growing up and encountering the world. Props and costumes inspired by the Seward House Museum collections and a post-play, interactive Q&A session will make this performance a truly special experience. An original one woman show, written and performed by Maria Coleman.

Playwright: Maria Coleman

Maria is an Auburn native. She graduated from Wells College in 2014 (Phi Theta Kappa/ Phi Beta Kappa) with her BA in Theatre & Dance. At Wells, Maria directed and acted in her senior thesis, in which she presented scenes from Jay Presson Allen’s “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and explored the psychological workings of Jean Brodie during pre-WWII Edinburgh. In this way, her thesis production combined Maria’s love of acting and character development with psychology and history, and also unknowingly prepared her for the type of work that was involved in this Fanny project. For the past four years, Maria has been fortunate to play Violet Bick, as part of Seneca Fall’s annual “It’s a Wonderful Life” Festival. Other favorite roles include Clarice in “The Servant of Two Masters,” Olivia in “Things My Mother Taught Me,” and Gayle in “Almost Maine.” Recently, Maria participated in a staged reading of “Epimythius” at the IATI Theater in NYC, as part of their “Cimientos” play development program.
