Energetically honoring the sound of traditional bluegrass and mountain music, with threads of singer-songwriter, rock, and jam band music woven throughout, The Wooks are as at home on a festival stage as they are in a barn in the heart of Kentucky's horse country. The Wooks: CJ Cain (guitar), Galen Green (mandolin), Arthur Hancock (banjo), Roddy Puckett (bass), and Jesse Wells (fiddle), were born over some 20 years time somewhere between a high school snack bar, an Irish pub, the radio waves, and a festival jam circle. Inspired by legends and trailblazers like Crowe, Whitley, Simpson, Bush, Stapleton, and Rice who cut their teeth on stages throughout the bluegrass region, The Wooks translate the sights and sounds of the people, hills, bars, roads, and creeks around them into songs and shows that captivate. With both respect for their heritage and innovative originality, The Wooks are the natural evolution of a sound that has always been there.
“Ragged Union is a powerful new group that has all the essential elements of a great band – top-notch musicians, original material, tight harmonies and blistering instrumentals!” Ken Seaman / Mid-Winter Bluegrass Festival
Ragged Union’s hard-driving bluegrass, with a tinge of the traditional and a healthy dose of the blues, has become a favorite for quite a few music lovers since their inception a few years ago. There is an intimacy and tightness surrounding the vocals, with award-winning instrumental work, a powerful rhythmic drive, and up tempo arrangements giving way to the edgy, outsider songwriting that has become an earmark of their style.
Their debut album, Hard Row to Hoe, introduces music lovers to a band whose leader, Geoff Union, moved with his wife Christina to Golden, Colorado from Austin, Texas, where they immediately dove into the Front Range bluegrass scene, from Oskar Blues to Avogadro’s Number, Cervantes Other Side, Swallow Hill, and the Golden Clear Creek Concert Series.
The band’s 2014-15 festival performances include Bluegrass on the Arkansas (Salida), The Kerrville Folk Festival (Kerrville, Texas), Mid Winter Bluegrass Festival, Groove Music and Arts Festival (Georgetown, Colorado), John Hartford Memorial Festival (Bean Blossom, IN), High Mountain Hay Fever Festival (Westcliffe, CO), Keystone Bluegrass, Avograss, and the Crested Butte Arts Fest.
Denver-based 5 piece bluegrass band, Turkeyfoot, has a hard-driving, traditional sound with hues of honky tonk mixed in.
