Cuco is an 18-year old self-produced Chicano singer out of Los Angeles, CA -- specifically the city of Hawthorne.
Cuco, born Omar Banos, first began playing music at the age of 8 years old.
After teaching himself how to use Ableton, Cuco was eager to start independently releasing his own music once finishing high school.
In 2016, Cuco released his first mixtape Wannabewithu -- a collection of teenage heartbreak over abstract chords, lo fi synths, ambient guitars, punchy drums, and lead trumpets that resonated with thousands of music lovers everywhere.
Mere months later, Cuco welcomed his newfound fans, or "Cuco Pebbles," with a follow up mixtape Songs4u (2017). Having only played So-Cal DIY house shows until recently, Cuco was shocked to sell out his first two venue shows at the Hi-Hat in Highland Park and the Constellation Room in Santa Ana.
With more shows already lined up for 2017, it's looking like a life-altering year for Hawthorne's Cuco.
A South Florida native, born to Ecuadorian immigrants and based in Brooklyn, Roberto Carlos Lange's upbringing provides essential elements to his songwriting, including his consistently bilingual -- English and Spanish -- lyrics. While citing the influence of electro and Miami-bass he heard on the radio in his youth, his diverse work as Helado Negro points to shades of kraut rock bathed in his mesmerizing rhythms, loops and hair-raising melodies. Known for his craftsmanship, Lange has cultured his identity, ideology and musical dexterity with constant artistic and introspective development, pouring his heart and full sincerity into his music. His fourth LP Double Youth released in 2014 garnered acclaim with Pitchfork naming it "the boldest and most intricate Helado Negro work to date." With a degree in Computer Art and Animation, Lange, a multifaceted creator, has worked with mediums such as video, sculpture, sound and performance. While Helado Negro is in a sense a one man band for the digital age, a constant collaborator, Lange has worked on projects with numerous artists including Sufjan Stevens, Julianna Barwick (as Ombre), Mikael Jorgensen (of Wilco), Guillermo Scott Herren (of Prefuse 73), Mouse on Mars, and sculptor David Ellis.
Helado Negro tours extensively and has performed in diverse venues from clubs to cultural organizations including the Wexner Center, Columbus; Walker Art Center; Mana Contemporary, Chicago; Museum of Natural History, L.A.; Mass MoCA, North Adams, Whitney Museum of Art, NYC. In 2015 he was the recipient of a Joyce Award and premiered an orchestral commission as part of the Liquid Music series during the inaugural festivities of the Ordway Center for Performing Arts in Saint Paul.
"Among the musicians currently redefining Latino culture worldwide, Helado Negro creates a sonic landscape that reflects 21st-century Latin America." - NPR
Lido Pimienta is a Toronto-based, Colombian-born interdisciplinary musician and artist-curator. She has performed, exhibited, and curated around the world since 2002, exploring the politics of gender, race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latin American diaspora and vernacular.
Lido's latest LP La Papessa (2016), charts an evolution from her debut LP Color (2010), an album full of (as the title suggests) colorful landscapes and positive vibrations. The 2017 Polaris Prize-nominated album, La Papessa, takes a more personal approach, describing the narrative of how Lido has found her independence as a woman and as an artist who refuses to fit pre-conceived notions of what a pop Latina artist ought to be.
The album was written in multiple cultural and geographic settings -- the desert of Indigenous Wayuu land and the northern mountains in Colombia, as well as in Canada, in both London and Toronto, Ontario -- and the music, in turn, reflects these settings. The sounds on La Papessa take listeners on a musical journey from traditional Afro-Colombian percussion to global bass and darker avant-garde electronic sounds. Lido's piercing, explosive and heartwarming voice unites the compositions, beats and harmonies, resulting in a perfect labour of love and sound that highlights the creative voice of this talented artist.
